David Bailey’s return to the field came with a little extra bite on Tuesday.
The Jets rookie was back after a minor ankle tweak, and during New York’s first joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, things boiled over between Bailey and Bucs right tackle Luke Goedeke. According to Jets X-Factor’s Robby Sabo, the two got into it after Goedeke got the better of Bailey in one-on-one pass-rush work and then added a shove after the rep was over.
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic described it this way: “David Bailey and Luke Goedeke just swung at each other and started a fight.”
Rosenblatt also reported that Goedeke had been jumping early on reps against Bailey, which led to some back-and-forth trash talk. Bailey then smacked Goedeke’s helmet, and Goedeke didn’t appreciate that.
For Jets fans, it’s the kind of scene that usually plays well in August. The rookie showing some edge in camp is the sort of thing that tends to earn a nod around Florham Park, and Bailey’s willingness to mix it up stood out after he had just returned to action.
Tuesday was the first of two joint practices between the Jets and Buccaneers before the teams meet in their preseason opener at MetLife Stadium on Friday night.
Tampa Bay is the only opponent New York has scheduled for joint practices this year, and the reason for that wasn’t given. The Jets have also taken a different approach to their practice calendar this summer, including back-to-back off days on Sunday and Monday.
Head coach Aaron Glenn said the team is using a “data-driven” approach to map out off days and practice sequences.
