The Jets are patching together their wide receiver room with some veteran help.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, New York is signing Sterling Shepard to its practice squad as injuries pile up at the position. Shepard, a former Giants and Buccaneers receiver, is coming back to New Jersey after a short stint with the Texans this summer.

The timing makes sense for the Jets, who are already thin at receiver. Tim Patrick landed on injured reserve before the season opener because of a groin injury, and Omar Cooper Jr. went down in Week 1 with an ankle sprain that has him listed as “week-to-week.”
Shepard, 33, is entering his 11th season after the Giants took him 40th overall in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft. In eight years with New York, he put up 372 catches for 4,095 yards and 23 touchdowns.
He spent the past two seasons in Tampa Bay, where he played 13 games in 2025 and hauled in 39 of 53 targets for 371 yards and one touchdown. He also had one drop, caught 5 of 11 contested targets, and forced five missed tackles.
What gives Shepard appeal here is versatility. Last season with the Buccaneers, he lined up in the slot on 49% of his routes and out wide on 51%, which gives the Jets another body who can help in multiple spots. That matters with Patrick out on the outside and Cooper sidelined from the slot.
When Cooper left the opener, Isaiah Williams took over in the slot for the rest of New York’s game against Tennessee.
Heading into Week 2, the Jets have only four healthy receivers on the active roster: Williams, Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell and Arian Smith, who had a brutal drop on his lone target. That makes Shepard a strong candidate to be elevated for the Week 2 matchup with the Packers if he’s healthy and ready to go.
A practice squad player can be promoted three times in a season, and with Cooper still week-to-week, Shepard could cover the next three games without needing an active roster spot. If he appears in three games from the practice squad, though, the Jets would have to sign him to the active roster before he can play again.
The Jets also added another receiver later in the day. Brian Costello of the New York Post reported that Tyler Johnson is joining the practice squad as well. Johnson, 28, played in 12 games for the Jets last season.

The Jets are making the following roster moves, per source:

Jets Cornerbacks Just Changed The Feel Around Aaron Glenns Defense
The first look at Aaron Glenns defense brought an encouraging sign for the Jets: the cornerback room looked ready to make life difficult for opposing quarterbacks. Against the Titans in Week 1, Brownlee led the group in coverage grade and did a strong job limiting the amount of attention he saw, while Brandon Stephens and Thomas also turned in positive outings. Stephens posted a 63.4 coverage grade, and Thomas finished with the second-highest mark on the team.
What made it even more interesting was how Glenn deployed Thomas throughout the game, moving him through different packages to keep Tennessee from settling in. For a defense trying to establish a new identity, that kind of flexibility matters, especially when the corners are holding up well enough to let the rest of the scheme breathe. The early returns were promising, even if the bigger test for this group is still ahead. [Read more 🡒]
Jets Suddenly Have A New Target Decision After Rookie Setback
Omar Cooper Jr. has given the Jets another reason to shuffle their passing-game plans after the rookie wide receiver came up with a week-to-week ankle sprain. The team expects him back within the next four weeks, but for now his absence leaves a gap in an offense that was still trying to settle in around its young players and find more reliable options for targets.
Kenyon Sadiq is suddenly in the middle of that conversation. The tight end missed training camp and the preseason while recovering from a hernia, yet he has already flashed enough early in the season to make the Jets think his role can grow while Cooper is out. For a team looking for answers, the setback has turned into a chance to see how much more the offense can lean on Sadiq in the meantime. [Read more 🡒]
Rex Ryan Just Framed The Aaron Glenn Debate Jets Fans Feel
Rex Ryan had plenty to say after the Jets 23-10 win over the Titans, and much of it reflected the kind of coaching conversation this fan base has been having for weeks. He praised the staff that now has the team moving in a better direction, with Aaron Glenn and Frank Reich both drawing credit as the Jets put together a cleaner, more complete performance on both sides of the ball.
The defensive work stood out again, with the Jets piling up tackles for loss and sacks to keep Tennessee under control. Ryan also singled out Geno Smiths play and took a shot at former coach Robert Saleh, which only sharpened the larger point underneath it all: the Jets are starting to look more stable, and Glenns place in that discussion is only getting louder.
