The New York Jets are keeping a key piece of their 2025 roster intact by re-signing linebacker Mykal Walker to a one-year contract. Walker, who initially joined the Jets' practice squad last September, quickly moved up to the active roster and made his presence felt in 14 games last season. His contributions on special teams and as a depth linebacker were crucial down the stretch.
While the Jets have made headlines with some big-name defensive signings this offseason, they haven’t overlooked the importance of retaining under-the-radar talent. Walker is among several role players, including tight end Jelani Woods, fullback Andrew Beck, and offensive lineman Max Mitchell, who have re-upped with the team on one-year deals.
Originally drafted by the Falcons in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Walker spent three seasons in Atlanta, starting 12 games in 2022. After brief stints with the Steelers and Commanders, he joined the Jets just before the 2025 season, having not made the Cardinals' final roster. Walker quickly became a staple on Chris Banjo's special-teams unit, participating in 81% of the Jets' special-teams snaps.
As the season progressed, Walker’s role on defense expanded. He started the last five games of the year, earning an impressive 80.4 Pro Football Focus grade, which ranked him eighth among qualified NFL linebackers during that span.
His impact on special teams was equally notable, leading the Jets with nine special teams tackles and achieving a career-high 80.2 PFF special teams grade. These performances made it clear why the Jets prioritized his return.
With the addition of former All-Pro linebacker Demario Davis on a two-year deal, Walker will have an opportunity this summer to compete for a top backup linebacker position alongside Jamien Sherwood. The exact terms of Walker's deal are still under wraps, but his return is a strategic move for the Jets as they bolster their depth and maintain a competitive edge.
