Jets Quarterback Debate Just Shifted Toward A Risky Veteran Swing

The New York Jets face a strategic decision between drafting a fresh quarterback or making a bold trade for Justin Herbert, despite the potential high cost and risks involved.

The Jets keep running into the same wall at quarterback, and the answer may not be sitting in their own building. Geno Smith hasn’t been a disaster, but he also hasn’t been the kind of solution that lets New York stop looking. With three first-round picks coming in next year’s draft, the Jets have real options, and one of them could eventually come through a trade.

That’s where Justin Herbert enters the picture.

Herbert is the kind of name that changes the conversation because he’s already shown enough to look like a legitimate franchise quarterback, even if the flaws are there. The idea only gets louder if the Chargers decide to reset after starting 0-4.

“I can’t believe it has come to this point, but it’s time the 0-4 Chargers explore every option for how to best rebuild this team, including the possibility of trading Herbert (19-of-31, 189 yards, TD, 2 INTs), who struggled in the 30-23 loss to the Seahawks. Herbert would likely generate at least two first-round picks, as the Lions did after trading Matthew Stafford to the Rams in 2021. Maybe even three first-rounders, since Herbert is only 28 and Stafford got moved after turning 30,” Gilberto Manzano wrote.

“Some might say that Herbert’s performances lately aren’t worth that asking price. The same was said about Stafford, who had his fair share of rough performances amid difficult circumstances in Detroit. (He didn’t become the all-time leader in pick-sixes thrown by accident.)”

That’s the risk-reward swing the Jets would be staring at. Herbert is good enough to tempt you, but expensive enough to make you stop and think hard. Three first-round picks is a massive ask for any quarterback who isn’t clearly among the best five to 10 players in the world.

And that’s the rub here. Herbert can be placed somewhere around that range, but he’s not a spotless bet. There are questions with him too, which is why New York would have to be careful about how far it goes.

If the price comes down to one or two first-round picks, the Jets suddenly have something far more reasonable to consider.

Jets Fans Have A Bigger Aaron Glenn Fear Right Now

The Jets on-field results have already pushed patience to the brink under Aaron Glenn, with the team sitting at 4-17 during his time as head coach. Fan frustration has turned into open calls for a change, but the bigger reality around Florham Park is that Glenns standing with owner Woody Johnson has become part of the conversation too, especially as the losses keep piling up.

Glenn and Johnson have maintained a long-running, open line of communication that goes back to Johnsons purchase of the team in 2000, and that relationship matters in a way few others do. Even with the pressure rising, the Jets recently celebrated their first interception under Glenn after a historically low takeaway stretch, but for a fan base looking for answers, one play is not nearly enough to calm the concern about where this season is headed. Jets Suddenly Have A New Defensive Concern Against Cleveland

The Jets are heading into their matchup with Cleveland with a possible late shakeup in the secondary, as Jarvis Brownlee Jr. remains in concussion protocol. For a defense that has tried to settle into a rhythm, the timing matters, especially with the Browns bringing a style of offense that can stress the middle of the field and test depth at corner.

D'Angelo Ponds has already been seeing more snaps in recent games, and the rookie would be the next man up at nickel if Brownlee cannot go. It would be a significant bump in responsibility for Ponds, who could be asked to handle a larger role in a game where the Jets may need clean communication and quick adjustments from the slot. Jets Projected For Aggressive QB Swing If Season Keeps Sliding

The Jets are 1-3 entering an upcoming matchup with the Cleveland Browns, and the slow start has already pushed the conversation beyond the present season. In a 2027 mock draft from Yahoo Sports' Nate Tice, the franchise is projected to make an aggressive move up the board if the slide continues, with the idea being that New York would not sit still if the quarterback situation remains unsettled.

Tice's projection has the Jets climbing all the way to the top spot in a deal with the Houston Texans, while keeping enough draft capital to avoid emptying the cupboard entirely. The target in that scenario is Texas quarterback Arch Manning, a name that would immediately reshape the long-term outlook in New York and add another layer of intrigue to a season that already feels like it is heading toward bigger decisions.
