The Jets are back at the drawing board with their offensive coordinator position, and this time, they’re clearly leaning into experience. After parting ways with Tanner Engstrand last week, the team has narrowed its search to three well-known names: Frank Reich, Darrell Bevell, and Greg Roman.
Each of these candidates brings a hefty résumé and a distinct offensive identity. Reich is known for his quarterback-friendly systems and adaptability, Bevell has a track record of working with top-tier signal callers and crafting balanced offenses, and Roman’s power-run schemes have consistently produced results, especially when paired with mobile quarterbacks. No matter who gets the nod, the Jets are signaling a clear shift in philosophy-one that values proven leadership on the offensive side of the ball.
That’s a noticeable change from a year ago. Head coach Aaron Glenn, in his first season at the helm, handed defensive duties to Steve Wilks and took a swing on an unproven offensive playcaller.
It was a bold move, but one that didn’t quite pan out the way the team had hoped. Now, entering year two, Glenn appears to be recalibrating.
He’s reportedly planning to take a more hands-on approach with the defense, while seeking a veteran voice to steady the offense.
It’s a smart pivot. With so much at stake-especially in a league where offensive continuity can make or break a season-the Jets seem to be prioritizing stability and experience over experimentation.
That doesn’t mean the decision is set in stone. As we’ve seen before, things can change quickly.
Just look at the defensive coordinator hire: early buzz pointed to Wink Martindale, a seasoned coach with a long track record. But in the end, the Jets went with Brian Duker, a rising name who wasn’t even on the initial shortlist.
So while Reich, Bevell, and Roman are the front-runners now, nothing’s official until the ink is dry. Still, the message is clear: the Jets are looking to add a seasoned hand to guide their offense-and after last season’s growing pains, that might be just what they need.
