Jets Mock Draft Signals A Risky QB Plan And Defensive Reset

With the Jets eyeing future success, questions loom over their choice of an unproven QB in a critical draft year brimming with defensive talent.

The Jets’ 2027 outlook got a fresh jolt in a recent mock draft, and it starts at the most important position of all. In Sports Illustrated’s Justin Melo’s latest projection, New York comes away with Oregon quarterback Dante Moore at No. 7 overall, giving the franchise a potential long-term answer after a rough Week 4 loss to the Chicago Bears has plenty of fans already looking ahead.

Moore is viewed as one of the class’s top names, but the road to this point has not been clean. Melo wrote, "Oregon quarterback Dante Moore suffered a scary-looking concussion in a win over USC and will now be sidelined for an undetermined amount of time. The setback complicates his scouting report, as did an ugly early-season showing versus Oklahoma State."

That makes the Jets’ selection feel a little more debatable than exciting right now. Notre Dame’s C.J. Carr and Oklahoma State’s Drew Mestemaker are mentioned as prospects who might look better in the slot, and either would probably bring a stronger wave of optimism to the fan base.

New York’s next two first-round swings in the mock go toward the defensive side. With the No. 12 pick, which Melo projects as coming from Dallas, the Jets land Ole Miss defensive tackle Will Echoles.

Melo pointed to the need up front, writing, "The Jets aren't receiving enough pass-rushing production from their defensive line, and that's especially true across the interior. Ole Miss' Will Echoles possesses dominant upside as a three-technique.

Size, speed, and first-step explosiveness are evident throughout his frame."

That fit makes sense given the state of the Jets’ interior line. Harrison Phillips, David Onyemata, and Jowon Briggs are all on one-year deals, and New York is not expected to keep all of them beyond this season. Echoles would give the group another young piece with upside.

The final first-round addition in Melo’s mock comes with the No. 13 pick, which the Jets received from Indianapolis in the Sauce Gardner trade. That selection brings Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV to New York, a move aimed at helping fill the void left by Gardner with a true No. 1 cornerback capable of handling an opponent’s top receiver.

Jets Face A Deshaun Watson Problem They Havent Seen In Years

Deshaun Watsons early-season resurgence has put the Jets on notice in a familiar way. New York defensive coordinator Brian Duker recently pointed to the way Watson has started the year, saying the Browns quarterback is playing at a level that recalls the version the Jets used to prepare for in Houston, before injuries and uneven stretches changed the scouting report around him.

Watsons work under Todd Monken has helped lift Cleveland to a strong start, and the early numbers back up the eye test. He has the Browns off to a 3-1 start and sits near the top of the league in completion rate and passer rating among qualified quarterbacks, which gives the Jets another reminder that facing Watson now is not the same challenge it was even a year ago. Jets Special Teams Have Become A Real Problem Early In 2026

For a unit that was No. 1 in the NFL in DVOA a year ago, the Jets special teams have taken an early step back in 2026. Chris Banjos group has been steadier in some areas than others, with Jason Sanders handling the kicking duties adequately and Austin McNamara providing mostly average punting work, but the overall operation has lacked the clean, reliable feel it had last season.

The bigger concern has been the return game, where the Jets have not been able to replace the spark of All-Pro kick returner Kene Nwangwu. Isaiah Williams has produced below-average returns and has already had issues pop up in recent games, leaving New York with another part of the roster that now feels like a weekly stress point rather than an advantage. Jets Face Early Gut Check As Doubt Grows Against Browns

The Jets head into a Week 5 home game against the Browns needing something to steady a season that has already started to slip. After opening with a win, New York has dropped three straight, and the challenge only gets steeper with the team dealing with key injuries, including running back Breece Hall, which leaves the offense thinner than it would like this early in the year.

The outside view on this matchup is not exactly encouraging for the Jets, either. Among seven NFL analysts from Bleacher Report making picks for the game, only one sided with New York, and even that came with the usual nod to home-field advantage rather than a strong belief in the matchup itself. For a team trying to avoid another setback, Sunday has the feel of an early gut check. [Read more 🡒]
