The Patriots got a welcome sight this week when AJ Brown got back on the practice field, but the wide receiver’s status for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets is still very much undecided.
Brown has been out since suffering a high-ankle sprain in his Week 1 Patriots debut against the Seattle Seahawks, and he has now missed more than four weeks. He was limited in practice on Wednesday and returned as a limited participant again on Thursday, offering at least a hint that a comeback is getting closer.
Still, Brown didn’t sound ready to call it. After Thursday’s session, he said the final call will come down to Mike Vrabel.
"It's still up in the air. Obviously, it's gonna be Coach [Mike] Vrabel's decision to see where I'm at and make the better decision for the long haul, not just temporarily," Brown said.
He added that his focus is day by day as he continues to build toward a return.
"I'm just trying to stack things every day. Right now my focus is going into today, just trying to get better and then just see how I feel after. ... today we're in pads, a lot more moving, you know from yesterday when guys weren't really trying to touch me," he explained about the difference in practices.
Brown’s situation has already forced the Patriots to prepare for two different versions of Sunday’s offense. According to the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has a plan ready if Brown is active, and another if he isn’t.
McDaniels pointed to the versatility of the receiving group around Brown, naming Efton Chism III, Romeo Doubs, Kyle Williams, Hunter Henry, DeMario "Pop" Douglas, and rookie Eli Raridon as players who can fill roles if needed.
"Yes, we have already talked about that, and the guys are studying both ends of the spectrum. And I'd say that's a credit to the guys because you talk about Chiz, Kyle, Romeo, Pop, Eli, Hunter. They all know multiple positions, and that's a great strength of our group in that we have some versatility," he said.
If Brown is cleared, it would give Drake Maye another major target and provide a real lift to the Patriots passing game. But with a high-ankle sprain and a season still in front of them, New England has every reason to be careful before pushing him back too soon.
The Patriots and Jets meet Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

Jets Still Can't Escape The Problem Defining Their Season
The Jets are sitting at 2-3 and have shown enough encouraging signs to keep the season from feeling lost in early October, but the larger issue around this team has not changed much. For all the occasional progress, their path still runs straight through the AFC East, where consistency has been elusive for years and where every divisional week tends to expose how far they still have to go.
New York does at least have a way to change the conversation if it chooses wisely with its draft capital. With extra picks from the Cowboys and Colts in hand, the front office has ammunition to chase a franchise quarterback, and that possibility hangs over everything else the Jets do this season. Until they solve the most important spot on the roster, even the promising stretches will keep feeling temporary. [Read more 🡒]
Jets Roster Churn Is Creating A Problem At The Worst Time
In a season already marked by constant turnover, the Jets are trying to keep the bottom of the roster from unraveling while key contributors work through injuries. AD Mitchell had finger surgery and is set to miss his fourth straight game, and the injury list around him is still crowded, with Breece Hall, Joseph Ossai and Dylan Parham all week-to-week while Kenyon Sadiq remains in concussion protocol.
The roster churn has already forced the Jets to keep shuffling answers, including bringing veteran linebacker Troy Reeder back to the practice squad after a brief split. There are at least a few bright spots around the edges, with David Bailey earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors and PFF floating a mock draft that imagines the Jets adding CJ Carr, Will Echoles and Ellis Robinson IV in the first round, but for now the bigger concern is simply surviving the week with enough healthy bodies. Jets Lose The Injury Break They Needed Against New England
For a Jets team already dealing with a list of week-to-week injuries, the latest news out of New England hardly helps. The Patriots opened the practice window for wide receiver A.J. Brown, who had been recovering from a high-ankle sprain, and he was back on the field Wednesday as the week moved toward the matchup with New York.
Christian Gonzalez also returned to practice and is expected to be ready for the Jets, while left tackle Will Campbell appears to be back in the mix after earlier injury concerns. For New York, which has Dylan Parham, Breece Hall, Adonai Mitchell and Joseph Ossai all unlikely to play, the injury report is starting to look more like a disadvantage than the break the Jets were hoping to catch.
