Jets May Finally Get WR Help But One Question Still Looms

The potential return of veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick could bolster the Jets' depleted offense as early as Week 6, injecting some much-needed depth and experience into their struggling lineup.

The New York Jets are finally getting a little relief at wide receiver.

After a rough start to the 2026 season that’s seen injuries pile up across Aaron Glenn’s roster, New York is opening the practice window for veteran Tim Patrick, according to The New York Post’s Brian Costello. Patrick has now served the required four-game absence, which puts him on the path back to the field.

That’s a welcome development for a Jets offense that has been stretched thin. The receiver room, once viewed as a strength, has been chipped away by injuries.

Patrick landed on injured reserve the day before the season began. Omar Cooper Jr. has been sidelined since hurting his ankle against the Tennessee Titans, and Adonai Mitchell has missed the last two games with a finger injury.

Patrick’s return won’t solve everything, but it gives the Jets something they desperately need: experience and depth. At this point, New York can’t be picky, and Patrick brings more stability than some of the practice squad options the team has had to lean on, including Malik McClain and Jamaal Pritchett.

There’s a good chance Patrick won’t be active for Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns, even with the practice window now open. The more realistic target is Week 6, when the Jets head to Foxborough to face the New England Patriots.

Either way, getting him back into the mix should help.

The next injury return the Jets are hoping for may be Cooper, though that timeline is still a bit further out. Since he was active at the start of Week 1, he has to miss at least one more game before New York can open his practice window.

His absence has been felt on two fronts. The Jets have lost another body in a depleted offense, and Cooper himself has lost valuable development time. For a young receiver, those weekly reps matter.

For now, Patrick is the one on the verge of coming back. If all goes well, Cooper may not be far behind.

Jets Opponent Suddenly Has A Quarterback Issue To Sort Out

The Browns have opened the clock on a pair of injured-reserve returns, designating quarterback Dillon Gabriel and defensive tackle Kalia Davis to come back to practice. Cleveland now has 21 days to decide whether either player gets activated to the active roster, a timeline that adds another layer to a quarterback room already worth watching from afar.

Gabriels return is the more interesting subplot for Jets watchers because it forces Cleveland to sort out where he fits behind Deshaun Watson and backup Shedeur Sanders. Even before the Browns make a decision, the move hints at more quarterback evaluation work ahead, and any shuffle there is the kind of thing opponents keep an eye on as they prepare for a game plan. Jets Fans Just Got An Uncomfortable New QB Option

The Jets quarterback picture already has a few moving parts, and now another one has been dropped into the mix. NFL analyst Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report recently floated New York as a possible trade destination for San Francisco backup Mac Jones, putting a concrete price on the idea with a conditional 2027 second-round pick.

Jones has already bounced from the Patriots to the Jaguars to the 49ers, and he is currently sitting behind Brock Purdy in San Francisco. For the Jets, it is another reminder that the search for insulation behind Geno Smith is not necessarily finished, even with rookie Cade Klubnik in the building after being drafted in 2026 and getting preseason reps. Jets Early Slide Could Force Tough Trade Deadline Calls

Three straight losses have quickly turned a promising start into a familiar kind of October pressure for the Jets, and a 1-3 record is already pushing the conversation toward the trade deadline. When a season tilts this early, the questions tend to shift from short-term fixes to longer-term roster decisions, and that is where a few veteran names and contract situations start drawing attention.

Harrison Phillips, Brandon Stephens and Will McDonald IV have all surfaced as players who could enter the discussion if the slide continues, each for different reasons tied to performance and where they fit in the team's plans. The next few weeks could determine whether the Jets try to stay the course or use the deadline to reset pieces of a roster that suddenly looks more fragile than expected. [Read more 🡒]
