Jets Lose The Injury Break They Needed Against New England

As the Jets gear up to face the Patriots, the return of A.J. Brown and potential comebacks from key injuries could tip the scales in New Englands favor.

The New York Jets caught a little breathing room early in the week, but that window may be closing fast.

New England entered Week 6 with some real questions after left tackle Will Campbell sprained his knee and running back TreVeyon Henderson hurt his ankle in the Patriots’ Week 5 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. That injury news had a way of making the matchup look a little friendlier for the Jets. But the Patriots have since started trending in the other direction.

The biggest swing came Wednesday, when NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that New England was opening the practice window for wide receiver A.J. Brown.

"The Patriots are opening the practice window for WR AJ Brown, coach Mike Vrabel told reporters. Brown, who remains on IR, has been pushing to practice this week. May be a bit early to return from a high-ankle sprain, but he’s trying."

Brown has been out since injuring himself in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, missing the last four games. Rapoport added that it "may be a bit early" for him to make it back for Week 6, but his return to practice at least gives New England another name to monitor as Sunday approaches.

Brown wasn’t the only key Patriot back on the field. All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez also practiced Wednesday after sitting out the last two games with a shoulder injury. Gonzalez said he’ll be "ready to go" for the Jets game, giving New England a major boost at one of the most important spots on the field.

There was also a bit of movement on Campbell’s status. The Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed reported seeing Campbell, who had been expected to miss time with the sprained knee, "walked through the locker room with cleats taped up, in shoulder pad shells and holding his jersey" on Wednesday. That suggests he may be further along than first believed.

Even with those encouraging updates, the Patriots still listed 16 players on their first injury report of the week, a longer-than-usual file that shows they’re not exactly clean heading into Sunday.

The Jets have plenty of their own issues, too. Aaron Glenn said Wednesday that left guard Dylan Parham, running back Breece Hall, wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, and edge Joseph Ossai are all "week-to-week" and unlikely to play in New England.

Jets Still Can't Escape The Problem Defining Their Season

The Jets are sitting at 2-3 and have shown enough encouraging signs to keep the season from feeling lost in early October, but the larger issue around this team has not changed much. For all the occasional progress, their path still runs straight through the AFC East, where consistency has been elusive for years and where every divisional week tends to expose how far they still have to go.

New York does at least have a way to change the conversation if it chooses wisely with its draft capital. With extra picks from the Cowboys and Colts in hand, the front office has ammunition to chase a franchise quarterback, and that possibility hangs over everything else the Jets do this season. Until they solve the most important spot on the roster, even the promising stretches will keep feeling temporary. [Read more 🡒]

Jets Roster Churn Is Creating A Problem At The Worst Time

In a season already marked by constant turnover, the Jets are trying to keep the bottom of the roster from unraveling while key contributors work through injuries. AD Mitchell had finger surgery and is set to miss his fourth straight game, and the injury list around him is still crowded, with Breece Hall, Joseph Ossai and Dylan Parham all week-to-week while Kenyon Sadiq remains in concussion protocol.

The roster churn has already forced the Jets to keep shuffling answers, including bringing veteran linebacker Troy Reeder back to the practice squad after a brief split. There are at least a few bright spots around the edges, with David Bailey earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors and PFF floating a mock draft that imagines the Jets adding CJ Carr, Will Echoles and Ellis Robinson IV in the first round, but for now the bigger concern is simply surviving the week with enough healthy bodies. Garrett Wilson Made Clear What Patriots Game Means For The Jets

The Jets are heading into their first AFC East divisional game of the season with a familiar sense of urgency, and Garrett Wilson made sure the matchup with New England sounds like more than just another early-season date on the schedule. New York has had its share of recent division issues, and for a team trying to establish itself under Aaron Glenn, this is the kind of game that can start shaping the tone of the year.

There is also a clear on-field pressure point beyond the rivalry factor. The Jets defense has generated only one interception in the Aaron Glenn era, while Drake Maye has already put up seven this season, leaving New York with a real test in the secondary as it prepares for a Patriots offense that has shown more bite than in recent years. For a team still searching for traction in the AFC East, the margin for error in this one feels awfully thin. [Read more 🡒]
