Jets Linked to Overlooked Prospect in Draft Decision Drama

Could Caleb Downs be the game-changing solution the Jets need to transform their defense with the No. 2 draft pick?

When it comes to the New York Jets and their No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft, fans are buzzing about the potential selection of either Arvell Reese or Rueben Bain Jr. But let’s not forget there’s another intriguing option on the table: Ohio State’s Caleb Downs.

While some might dismiss Downs due to the perceived lower value of drafting a safety so high, it’s hard to imagine Jets fans being upset if he’s the choice. Downs isn’t just any safety-he’s a game-changer.

Many analysts hesitate to rank Downs among the top three prospects due to positional value, but that viewpoint might be overlooking his unique impact. Downs isn’t confined to the traditional safety role.

In 2025, he showcased his versatility by playing 241 snaps in the box, 240 at free safety, 146 at slot cornerback, and even 9 at boundary cornerback. This kind of flexibility could be exactly what the Jets’ defense needs-a dynamic playmaker who can do it all.

Downs’ instincts are top-notch, earning him unanimous All-American honors over the past two years and the prestigious 2025 Jim Thorpe Award, recognizing him as college football’s best defensive back. His stats from last season speak volumes: two interceptions, two forced fumbles, 68 tackles (five for loss), and two passes defended-all while not allowing any touchdowns in coverage.

The Jets’ defense struggled last season, ranking 31st in DVOA, with glaring holes at nearly every position. The safety spot was a particular sore point, especially after free agent addition Andre Cisco went down with a season-ending injury in Week 8.

This left the Jets relying on Tony Adams, who had a 15.5% missed tackle rate, and rookie Malachi Moore. Even before his injury, Cisco was having a tough time.

While Arvell Reese might be more flashy, drawing comparisons to Micah Parsons with his athletic prowess and pass-rushing skills, Downs offers a different kind of boost to the Jets’ defense. His ability to elevate the team's overall performance shouldn’t be underestimated.

Sure, positional value will factor into the Jets’ decision-making process. But with needs across the board, the priority should be adding the best talent available to address those gaps. Caleb Downs could be the perfect fit to help turn things around for Gang Green.
