If the New York Jets fall short of landing one of the top picks in the 2026 NFL Draft-and with it, a shot at a young quarterback like Fernando Mendoza or Dante Moore-they may be eyeing a different path to stabilize the most important position on the field. That path could lead them to Arizona, where Kyler Murray's future with the Cardinals is looking murkier by the week.
Murray, once seen as the face of the Cardinals franchise, was deactivated following his latest injury. The writing on the wall is starting to look more like a billboard: Arizona might be ready to move on. And if that’s the case, the Jets could be among the first to make a call.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. According to league sources, Murray’s trade market isn’t expected to be particularly crowded.
His hefty contract, coupled with a growing list of injury concerns, has made some front offices hesitant. That could play right into the Jets’ hands.
Low Market, High Upside?
If you’re the Jets, this scenario offers two potential advantages. First, fewer suitors means less competition-New York wouldn’t have to outbid half the league to get him.
Second, it could mean a lower asking price. Arizona may not be able to command a king’s ransom for a player they seem ready to part with, especially if the market is lukewarm.
Murray still has two years remaining on a massive five-year deal, and while that contract might scare off some teams, the Jets are in a rare position of strength when it comes to cap space. They can afford to take on a big number if they believe the upside is there.
And make no mistake-there’s still upside with Kyler Murray.
What Murray Brings to the Table
Yes, there are questions about his durability and whether his playing style will age well. But at just 29 years old, Murray isn’t exactly past his prime.
When healthy, his arm talent is top-tier, and he remains one of the most dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks in the league. His ability to extend plays and make things happen outside of structure is something the Jets’ offense has sorely lacked.
Part of his struggles in Arizona can be traced to the supporting cast, particularly the offensive line. Outside of Paris Johnson Jr., the Cardinals haven’t done much to protect their quarterback. That’s not to say the Jets have an elite unit up front, but they’ve made strides-and with Murray’s mobility, even modest improvements in protection could go a long way.
The Alternative: Jacoby Brissett
It’s worth noting that Jacoby Brissett has posted better passing numbers than Murray this season. But numbers don’t always tell the full story.
Brissett’s performance hasn’t translated into wins-Arizona has just one victory in his 10 starts. That’s not all on the quarterback, of course, but it underscores the need for a reset on both sides.
For Murray, a change of scenery could be just what he needs. For the Jets, he could represent a bridge-or maybe more-if they miss out on a top-tier rookie.
A Calculated Gamble
This wouldn’t be a no-risk move. The injuries are real, and the contract is significant. But if the Jets believe their window is still open, and if they’re not sold on the options available in the middle of the first round, Murray could be a worthwhile gamble.
He’s going to get another shot somewhere. The only question is where. And if the Jets are looking for a spark-something to reignite the fanbase and stabilize the offense-they might just be first in line.
