As we dive into the 2026 offseason, the running back market is heating up with Javonte Williams, Breece Hall, and Travis Etienne leading the pack as top free agents. The Dallas Cowboys have already made a decisive move by securing Williams with a three-year, $24 million extension, including $16 million guaranteed. This sets a clear benchmark for what Hall and Etienne might expect in free agency.
Breece Hall is drawing significant attention due to his explosive abilities both as a runner and a pass-catcher. His dynamic skill set makes him a highly sought-after asset. Meanwhile, Travis Etienne boasts a more consistent production record with three 1,000-yard seasons, showcasing his dual-threat capability in both the running and passing games.
Spotrac projects Etienne's market value at a two-year, $13.6 million deal, slightly below Williams' annual earnings. However, given his track record, Etienne could very well secure a contract closer to Williams' $8 million per year.
Hall's projected deal, according to Spotrac, is a four-year, $41.5 million contract. With his high demand, a double-digit annual average salary isn't out of reach.
However, the Jets might not let him test free agency waters. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler suggests that the Jets are considering using the franchise tag on Hall, or possibly the transition tag, which would allow him to negotiate with other teams while giving the Jets the chance to match any offer.
The transition tag for running backs in 2026 is set at $11.7 million, and if the Jets choose this route, Hall could potentially see offers exceeding $12 million per year.
On the other hand, Etienne seems more likely to explore the open market, as the Jaguars are less inclined to use the tag on him. As the offseason unfolds, these developments will be crucial for teams looking to strengthen their backfield with proven talent.
