Jets Get Intriguing Brian Thomas Jr Trade Buzz

The New York Jets are exploring trade options to bolster their wide receiver lineup, with Brian Thomas Jr. emerging as a potential acquisition despite the Jaguars' claims of his availability.

The New York Jets have been making waves this offseason, diving headfirst into the NFL free agency pool and surfacing with some significant acquisitions. The most eye-catching move? Bringing back Geno Smith, the quarterback who first donned the Jets' green in 2013, via a trade with the Raiders.

But the Jets didn't stop there. They've bolstered their defense by trading for Titans' defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat and Dolphins' safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Adding to their defensive depth, they signed former Pro Bowl linebacker Demario Davis to a two-year contract. With Aaron Glenn at the helm for his second year, the Jets are clearly on a mission to elevate their game.

However, there's one area still begging for attention: the wide receiver corps. Beyond Garrett Wilson, the options are thin.

The Jets could address this in the 2026 NFL Draft, where they hold four picks within the first 44 selections, including two in the first round. Yet, there's buzz around the potential for another trade to bring in a seasoned wideout.

Rich Cimini from ESPN suggests that Jets GM Darren Mougey might be eyeing a trade for a veteran receiver instead of banking on the draft. Given Mougey's track record-12 player trades in just over a year-it’s a plausible strategy. Names like Brian Thomas Jr. from the Jaguars, Rashod Bateman from the Ravens, Quentin Johnston from the Chargers, and Dontayvion Wicks from the Packers are being floated as possibilities.

Among these, Brian Thomas Jr. stands out. Despite a dip in performance last season, with 707 yards and two touchdowns, his rookie year was stellar-87 catches for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Jaguars have publicly stated Thomas Jr. isn’t on the market, but his situation in Jacksonville seems tenuous, especially with Trevor Lawrence leading the offense.

The Jaguars are in no rush to trade Thomas Jr., as he's still on a rookie contract and they’re eyeing an AFC South title. Liam Coen’s debut season as Jacksonville’s coach was a triumph, but Thomas Jr.’s role in the team’s future is uncertain.

For the Jets, acquiring Thomas Jr. could be a game-changer. He’d not only complement Wilson but also provide a dynamic target for whoever is under center-be it Smith or potentially Ty Simpson, if the Jets decide to draft him. Thomas Jr. could be the missing piece in the Jets' offensive puzzle as they search for their quarterback of the future.
