The Jets got a welcome sight on Tuesday with rookie cornerback D’Angelo Ponds back on the field, but his return brings just as many questions as it does relief.
According to The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt, Ponds was working with the corners in positional drills after missing all of training camp with a calf strain. That lines up with what head coach Aaron Glenn said about Ponds being ready for Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans, which is now just a couple of days away.
The timing matters. New York took Ponds with the 50th overall pick in April’s draft and expected him to push for a starting role right away, either on the outside or at nickel cornerback.
He was never going to be handed the job, but the door was open. The Jets’ cornerback room has been shaky enough that a rookie with his profile could have carved out real playing time.
Instead, Ponds spent the summer sidelined, and that changes the equation. He’s back now, but he’s also behind after losing all those camp reps. That makes it tough to know how quickly he can handle meaningful snaps once the games count.
The talent is obvious. Ponds was a three-year starter in college and spent two of those years starting at Indiana.
His speed and instincts in coverage stand out, and even though he’s undersized, the Jets believe in his physicality. That belief hasn’t gone anywhere.
Still, there’s a difference between getting back on the practice field and being ready to carry a real workload in Week 1. Ponds is also expected to spend some time inside, and that brings a learning curve of its own.
So even if he’s active against Tennessee, the Jets are unlikely to throw him into a heavy snap count. He’d be on a pitch count, not asked to handle the bulk of the defensive work. Anything else would be too much, too soon.
For New York, the short-term answer has to be caution. Getting Ponds back is a good development, but the smarter move is easing him in rather than forcing the issue right away.
