Jets Free Agent Stuns NFL With Unexpected Interest as Potential Starter

Interest grows in Tony Adams as teams weigh his starting potential despite past challenges with the Jets.

The New York Jets are facing some intriguing decisions as free agency looms, with running back Breece Hall being a key concern for fans. Yet, it's not just Hall who might be drawing attention. Safety Tony Adams is reportedly on the radar of several teams, potentially as a starting safety.

Adams, who’s been honing his skills with renowned trainer Rich Sadiv in New Jersey, has an interesting journey. Joining the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Illinois in 2022, Adams quickly made his mark. After impressing during his rookie summer, he secured a spot on the Jets' roster and transitioned from a backup safety and special teams player to a starting role by 2023.

Over four seasons, Adams has started 36 of his 53 games with the Jets, amassing 232 tackles, four interceptions, 16 passes defended, and two sacks. Despite these stats, his journey hasn't been without challenges.

He was benched after his fourth start last season, even as the Jets struggled defensively. A similar situation occurred in 2024, with speculation hinting at ownership's involvement in the decision.

Standing at six feet and weighing 205 pounds, Adams has faced issues with tackling, missing 38 tackles over his career, and posting a 15.5% missed tackle rate last season. However, his coverage skills provide some upside. In 2025, he excelled in man coverage from the slot, allowing just 3-of-8 passing for 10 yards over 29 snaps, showing his speed and matchup potential.

Yet, when not in the slot, Adams struggled, allowing 10-of-13 passing for 146 yards and a touchdown, resulting in a 138.6 passer rating. This raises questions about his consistency outside of specialized roles.

A potential shift to a full-time slot corner position could be beneficial, though it's uncertain if teams would see him as a starter there, given his limited experience in that role. While Adams' tenure with the Jets hasn't solidified him as a starter, his experience and skills make him a valuable asset as a backup. A starting role might be a stretch, but he certainly has a place on an NFL roster.
