The New York Jets are already being mentioned as a possible destination for Mike Tomlin if he decides to coach again in 2027.
That idea starts with where the Jets stand heading into the 2026 NFL season. This is a team that is not expected to come in with huge win-now pressure, and the bigger picture is about laying a foundation and identifying which players can actually stick around long term.
The problem, of course, is that New York has been stuck in this cycle for a long time. The Jets last reached the playoffs in the 2010 season, and since then the franchise has cycled through head coaches and quarterbacks without finding a real answer.
That reality puts a spotlight on Aaron Glenn. He enters 2026 with plenty to prove after the Jets went 3-14 in his first season, and another year in that neighborhood could make his hold on the job very shaky. If the team does not show meaningful progress, change could be coming.
That is where Tomlin enters the conversation. He is out of football for the upcoming season after parting ways with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, ending a run that lasted 19 years. NFL analyst Moe Moton of Bleacher Report named five teams that could make sense for Tomlin, and the Jets were among them. It is not hard to see why. If the organization decides to move on from Glenn, Tomlin would bring instant credibility and the kind of established presence that can reshape a locker room.
His résumé speaks for itself. In Pittsburgh, Tomlin won a Super Bowl and guided the Steelers to the playoffs in most of his seasons at the helm. He finished with a 193-114-2 regular-season record and went 8-12 in the playoffs.
The appeal for Tomlin would not stop there. New York City offers its own pull, and the Jets could give him a clean slate with a quarterback of his own choosing. Right now, the team does not have a franchise quarterback, and if 2026 goes sideways again, New York would likely be sitting near the top of the 2027 NFL Draft.
Glenn still has a path to keeping his job, but the Jets need clear improvement to make that happen. If they do not find it, Tomlin could become a major name in the organization’s future head coaching plans.
