The Jets didn’t spend the No. 3 overall pick on David Bailey to let him ease into the league. They brought him in to hit the ground running, and ESPN thinks that’s exactly what he’ll do.
In ESPN’s 2026 rookie season guide, Bailey is projected to lead all NFL rookies in sacks with eight. That puts the Jets edge rusher ahead of Tampa Bay Buccaneers defender Rueben Bain Jr., who was forecast for six, and Los Angeles Chargers EDGE Akheem Mesidor, who was projected for five.
It’s another clear sign of the buzz building around Bailey before he’s even played a regular-season snap. The former Texas Tech Red Raiders standout has already turned heads in training camp and the preseason, showing off the burst and athletic traits that helped make him one of the top prospects in the 2026 draft class.
For New York, the timing matters. The Jets came into the offseason looking for help getting after the quarterback, and Bailey looks ready to be part of that answer right away.
An eight-sack rookie year would be a strong debut for any pass rusher, especially one expected to carry a meaningful workload from day one. It would also give a Jets defense a major lift after a disappointing 2025 campaign.
The encouraging part for New York is that Bailey won’t be asked to do it alone. The Jets also added veteran reinforcements on the defensive front this offseason in Kingsley Enagbare and Joseph Ossai, giving the rookie a chance to learn from players who have already done the job and to find favorable matchups as he grows.
Of course, projections are just projections.
Even so, Bailey has sparked excitement since arriving in Florham Park. If Clay’s forecast comes through, the Jets could have one of the league’s most productive rookie defenders and a legitimate name in the Defensive Rookie of the Year conversation.
For now, the prediction only adds to the expectations waiting for Bailey when Week 1 arrives.
