Alijah Vera-Tucker’s first night in a Patriots uniform did not exactly quiet the noise back in New York.
The former Jets offensive lineman, who turned plenty of goodwill into hard feelings when he left for a three-year deal with New England in free agency, posted a shaky debut against the Seattle Seahawks. Jets fans had every reason to notice. Vera-Tucker was charged with four pressures and one sack, and his 60.7 PFF grade and 54.1 pass-block grade reflected a rough outing in Seattle’s 13-10 win.
It wasn’t a disaster on the level of a truly infamous debut, but it also wasn’t the kind of performance that makes a team feel better about paying premium money for line help. If the Patriots were counting on him to stabilize things up front, Wednesday night did not offer much encouragement.
New England is clearly betting on Vera-Tucker’s versatility. The Patriots moved him from right guard to left guard so they could slide young center Jared Wilson back to his college position, a move that says plenty about how much they trust him to handle a position switch. The problem is that confidence comes with real risk, especially for a player whose recent injury history has been hard to ignore.
Vera-Tucker was a dependable lineman when healthy with the Jets, but he also missed 41 games over the last four seasons. Three of those seasons ended with a season-ending injury before the halfway point of the year. That kind of availability record naturally raises the question of how much of his old form is still there.
Against Seattle, the answer looked discouraging. He had issues in both phases, getting exposed in pass protection and struggling to help the Patriots move bodies in the run game.
By the fourth quarter, Seattle’s defensive front was consistently getting after Drake Maye whenever he dropped back, and the Patriots’ run game never found much breathing room. Rhamondre Stevenson finished with just one yard before contact for the entire game.
The night also belonged to one of the ugliest team quarters you’ll see. The Patriots became the only team in the last 30 years to throw at least three picks, take three or more sacks, and commit three or more penalties while scoring zero points in any given quarter.
For Jets fans, there’s an added layer here: they’ve already moved on at right guard. Joe Tippmann has settled in after switching from center and earned a four-year contract extension for his work there. Josh Myers is manning center, and Dylan Parham is giving them a cheap, usable starter at left guard.
That leaves New York in a curious spot. There are not many position groups where the Jets can claim an edge over the Patriots, but if Vera-Tucker keeps turning in performances like this, the offensive line conversation starts tilting that way in a hurry.
And for a fan base that may be happy to savor every Patriots stumble, Vera-Tucker’s exit only sharpened the edge. When New England struggles and he’s part of the problem, Jets fans are going to notice - and they’re going to let it be known.
