The New York Jets got plenty to like out of Friday night’s preseason win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, and David Bailey made sure his name was part of the conversation.
The No. 2 overall pick picked up his first NFL sack, dropping Steelers quarterback Will Howard just past the midway point of the first quarter. On a third-and-9 from the Jets’ own 42-yard line, Bailey beat former first-round pick Broderick Jones and finished off an 11-yard loss that pushed Pittsburgh out of field goal range.
Bailey didn’t turn the moment into much of a scene, even if Harrison Phillips later suggested the celebration could use some work. That fit the tone of the night for the Texas Tech standout, who has looked sharp all summer and kept backing up the preseason buzz around him.
“It felt amazing. It was a sense of relief,” Bailey told the New York Post's Brian Costello. “It felt good knowing my interior line did their job and the coverage did their job and just allowed me to capitalize.”
That credit-the-group mindset came after a play that had a little extra edge for Jets fans. Jones was a player New York was reportedly targeting in the 2023 NFL Draft before the New England Patriots made the trade that let the Steelers move up and land the former Georgia Bulldogs offensive tackle.
Bailey’s first sack was only part of a strong outing. He was on the field for the Jets’ first three defensive possessions with the starters, logged two pressures, and finished with the sack across 12 snaps.
What happens next is still to be determined, with Aaron Glenn’s plans for the preseason finale against the New York Giants not yet clear. If the Jets do decide to give key players the night off, Bailey sounds like someone who has already done enough to earn it.
