Kenyon Sadiq’s first game with the New York Jets may come with a limited workload, but that doesn’t mean he’s arriving quietly.
The Jets made Sadiq the 16th overall pick, banking on a tight end with the kind of tools that can change an offense. His summer, though, took a hit when a hernia injury kept him out of most of training camp and cost him a stack of valuable reps. Even so, he was back at practice last week, and offensive coordinator Frank Reich said Thursday that the rookie has settled back in well.
"Kenyon [Sadiq] has done a very good job of integrating himself back in very quickly."
That kind of progress matters heading into Sunday, especially for a player who missed so much time. The expectation is that Sadiq will be active, but his snap count likely stays in the 15-20 range. The Jets probably won’t ask him to carry a heavy load right away, but they should still have a plan to get him involved.
That plan makes plenty of sense against Robert Saleh’s defense. Saleh’s groups are built to attack up front, which can create openings behind them, especially on screens.
Jets fans know that look well from Saleh’s time in New York. His defenses also lean heavily on zone, and that can leave soft areas in coverage for drags and crossers to work into.
Athletic tight ends have caused Saleh’s defenses problems before, and Sadiq fits that mold. At 6'3", 241 pounds with a 4.39 40-yard dash, he brings a rare blend of size and speed that can stress a defense if he’s put in space.
The matchup may tilt even more if Tennessee is missing Cedric Gray. Gray is in the concussion protocol after a UTV accident last weekend and has officially been ruled out. That’s a significant loss, since he is their best linebacker and a player who adds speed to the second level.
Sadiq won’t be the centerpiece of the passing game in Week 1, but four-plus targets would not be a surprise. The Jets can move him around, whether that’s in 12 personnel, in the slot, or even at fullback, and the idea will be the same: get the ball in his hands and let the matchup work.
His role should grow as the season moves along. This may be his smallest workload of the year when he’s active, but it still gives New York a chance to feature one of its most intriguing pieces right away. Fans should keep an eye on No. 16 when he’s on the field.
