NFL.com has Geno Smith sitting 19th among starting quarterbacks heading into Week 6, a placement that leaves the New York Jets veteran somewhere in the middle of the league’s pack.
Smith lands one spot ahead of Kyler Murray of the Minnesota Vikings and one spot behind Sam Darnold of the Seattle Seahawks. For a Jets team sitting at 2-3, that ranking reflects a quarterback who has been steady enough without forcing a broader conversation about the job.
Through five games, Smith has thrown for 1,084 yards and six touchdowns in his second stint with New York. He’s completing 69.4% of his passes, and the veteran’s résumé still carries the weight of his best years with the Seattle Seahawks, where he made the Pro Bowl in 2022 and 2023 and took home AP Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2022.
Smith came into the season with 22,168 career passing yards, 124 passing touchdowns and 89 interceptions. He also enters the Jets’ Week 6 matchup against the New England Patriots with a 44-59-0 record as a starter.
Even with those numbers, some Jets fans are already looking ahead to rookie Cade Klubnik. There’s a belief that Aaron Glenn could eventually give the rookie a shot, especially if New York is eliminated from playoff contention. For now, though, Smith hasn’t done anything to lose the gig.
Klubnik’s preseason line was uneven: 21 of 34 passing for 190 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. His stock has already traveled quite a bit.
Entering the 2025 college football season, he was projected as a top pick in the 2026 draft, but his struggles with Clemson changed that picture. The Jets still selected him with the 110th overall pick in the 2026 draft, and Klubnik remains confident in his game.
He finished the 2025 college season with 2,943 passing yards and 16 touchdowns, and he closed out his Clemson career with 10,123 passing yards and 73 touchdown passes.
The Patriots present another difficult test. New York lost both meetings with New England last season, and Drake Maye has thrown seven touchdown passes over his last two games after managing just one in the first three.
ESPN also noted that the Jets are playing more zone than man-to-man this season, which makes the low interception total even harder to explain. The Dallas Cowboys are the only team with zero interceptions.
The bigger picture for New York hasn’t changed much. The Jets went 0-6 in the division last season in Glenn’s first year, and since drafting Wilson in 2022 they are 6-18 in AFC East games. From 2020 to 2022, the team also lost 15 straight division games.

Jets Still Can't Escape The Problem Defining Their Season
The Jets are sitting at 2-3 and have shown enough encouraging signs to keep the season from feeling lost in early October, but the larger issue around this team has not changed much. For all the occasional progress, their path still runs straight through the AFC East, where consistency has been elusive for years and where every divisional week tends to expose how far they still have to go.
New York does at least have a way to change the conversation if it chooses wisely with its draft capital. With extra picks from the Cowboys and Colts in hand, the front office has ammunition to chase a franchise quarterback, and that possibility hangs over everything else the Jets do this season. Until they solve the most important spot on the roster, even the promising stretches will keep feeling temporary. [Read more 🡒]
Jets Roster Churn Is Creating A Problem At The Worst Time
In a season already marked by constant turnover, the Jets are trying to keep the bottom of the roster from unraveling while key contributors work through injuries. AD Mitchell had finger surgery and is set to miss his fourth straight game, and the injury list around him is still crowded, with Breece Hall, Joseph Ossai and Dylan Parham all week-to-week while Kenyon Sadiq remains in concussion protocol.
The roster churn has already forced the Jets to keep shuffling answers, including bringing veteran linebacker Troy Reeder back to the practice squad after a brief split. There are at least a few bright spots around the edges, with David Bailey earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors and PFF floating a mock draft that imagines the Jets adding CJ Carr, Will Echoles and Ellis Robinson IV in the first round, but for now the bigger concern is simply surviving the week with enough healthy bodies. Jets Lose The Injury Break They Needed Against New England
For a Jets team already dealing with a list of week-to-week injuries, the latest news out of New England hardly helps. The Patriots opened the practice window for wide receiver A.J. Brown, who had been recovering from a high-ankle sprain, and he was back on the field Wednesday as the week moved toward the matchup with New York.
Christian Gonzalez also returned to practice and is expected to be ready for the Jets, while left tackle Will Campbell appears to be back in the mix after earlier injury concerns. For New York, which has Dylan Parham, Breece Hall, Adonai Mitchell and Joseph Ossai all unlikely to play, the injury report is starting to look more like a disadvantage than the break the Jets were hoping to catch.
