Jets Face New Challenge in Pursuit of Veteran Quarterback Options

Jets face steep trade costs in pursuit of a seasoned quarterback, challenging their roster strategy amid high demands and limited options.

As the New York Jets wrap up their season, General Manager Darren Mougey is on a mission to find the team's next starting quarterback. His commitment to "exhaust every option" sets the stage for a busy offseason, starting with the NFL Scouting Combine. Here, Mougey will dive into discussions with other GMs and agents, focusing on potential quarterback acquisitions.

Some analysts suggest the Jets might explore trades for veteran backups like the 49ers' Mac Jones, the Eagles' Tanner McKee, and the Texans' Davis Mills. However, these quarterbacks might come with a hefty price tag.

Zack Rosenblatt from The Athletic notes that the trade market for quarterbacks is steep, even for those with limited experience. The 49ers have been vocal about retaining Jones, possibly as a negotiation tactic, with Rosenblatt estimating a second-round pick could be required to acquire him.

The Jets have the draft assets to make such a move, holding two second-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. Yet, the question remains: Can they afford to spend one of these picks on a quarterback when other areas of the roster need attention?

Tanner McKee from the Eagles is another intriguing option, especially given his fit with new offensive coordinator Frank Reich's system. However, Philadelphia values McKee highly, and the cost might be steeper than anticipated.

Rosenblatt also highlights Davis Mills from the Texans and veteran Jacoby Brissett from the Cardinals as potential targets. Mills brings size and some starting experience, but Houston recently extended him, which could complicate trade talks. Brissett, along with other veterans not slated to start, might also be worth considering.

With Jones potentially commanding a second-round pick, other quarterbacks could be available for third or fourth-round selections. It's clear that other teams are aware of the Jets' urgency to secure a quarterback, and they're likely to leverage that in trade negotiations.

The Jets face a crucial decision-making period as they weigh their options and consider the future of their quarterback position.
