The New York Jets’ 2026 season already has one obvious watch point: what happens at quarterback after Geno Smith.
Smith is set to open the year as the starter, and while he may not be a star at this point in his career, he gives the Jets a more interesting option than Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, or Brady Cook. That alone makes the offense worth following a little closer.
Behind him sits rookie fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik, and ESPN’s Dan Graziano says the rookie’s chance could come late in the season - possibly as late as December.
“If the Jets fall out of contention and/or Geno Smith struggles, Klubnik could get a late-season look,” Graziano writes.
That does not mean the Jets are locked into handing the job over to Klubnik, but the situation makes sense on paper. New York has three first-round picks and is expected to take a quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft, so the team could use the final stretch of 2026 to see what Klubnik can actually do.
There is even a path, however unlikely, where Klubnik closes the season strong enough to change the conversation. If he played at a high level, the Jets could theoretically use those first-round picks to strengthen the rest of the roster and build around him instead. That would be a big swing, and it is far from the most likely outcome, but the team will not know if that possibility exists unless he gets a shot.
Graziano also drew a comparison to Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Carson Beck, who could be in line for his first start in December.
For Klubnik, that kind of timeline would point to a debut coming out of the Week 14 bye week, with Denver, Arizona, New England, Minnesota, and Buffalo waiting to finish out the 2026 schedule.
That is a rough closing stretch, but it also gives the Jets a clear test. If Klubnik handles those games well, he would have a real case to be considered the long-term answer. If not, New York could be looking at another high draft pick and another quarterback search.
For now, Jets fans should probably expect to wait. Klubnik likely does not see the field until very late in the year unless Smith gets hurt or becomes impossible to keep starting. Still, the rookie should get some action at some point, because the Jets have little to lose by finding out what they have.
