The New York Jets are reportedly eyeing quarterback Carson Wentz to bolster their depth chart, serving as a backup to newly-acquired starter Geno Smith. Wentz's previous collaboration with offensive coordinator Frank Reich adds an intriguing layer to this potential move, given their shared history.
Wentz, who remains a free agent this offseason, has been linked to the Jets on multiple occasions. At 32, he brings a wealth of experience, having been a first-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016.
His rookie contract, valued at $26.7 million, included a hefty $16.7 million signing bonus. The Eagles exercised his fifth-year option, which would have cost them $22.78 million in 2020.
Philadelphia doubled down on Wentz’s potential with a four-year, $128 million extension in 2019, featuring $107 million guaranteed. However, the relationship soured, leading to his trade to the Indianapolis Colts for first- and third-round picks.
Wentz's stint with the Colts was short-lived, as he was traded to the Washington Commanders after just one season. Following a brief tenure in Washington, he joined the Rams as a backup before signing a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024. He later landed with the Minnesota Vikings in August.
In 2025, Wentz played in five games for the Vikings, completing 65.1% of his passes for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. His journey through the league has been a rollercoaster, and joining the Jets could offer a fresh start under familiar guidance.
