Jets Eye Bold QB Pick in Kiper's Latest Mock Draft

Jets poised to balance immediate needs and future potential by eyeing Alabama's Ty Simpson, per Mel Kiper's latest draft insights.

The New York Jets are making headlines once again with their latest quarterback maneuvers. Recently, they brought back veteran Geno Smith, but the buzz around the league suggests they might not be done shopping for talent under center. NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. has weighed in with his latest mock draft, predicting that the Jets will snag Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 16th overall pick in the 2026 draft.

Simpson, despite having just 15 career starts, has caught Kiper's eye with his impressive accuracy, quick decision-making, and pocket mobility. In 2025, he threw for 28 touchdowns, solidifying his status as a first-round talent.

The Jets are in a position where they don't necessarily need to draft a quarterback this year, especially with Geno Smith as a bridge option. Plus, they hold three first-round picks in the 2027 draft, when the quarterback class is expected to be even stronger. However, Simpson's potential might be too tempting for New York to pass up.

Kiper suggests that the Jets should take a calculated risk to solve their long-term quarterback dilemma. Drafting Simpson could allow him to develop behind Smith, eventually stepping into the starting role when ready.

This move comes on the heels of the Jets trading Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs. Fields, who started most of the 2025 season, struggled as the Jets finished with a 3-14 record.

With the second overall pick also in their arsenal, the Jets are expected to bolster their defense, aiming to build a more competitive team for the upcoming seasons.
