Jets Eye Another QB as Geno Smith Joins the Team

Jets Eye Dynamic Pairing: Geno Smith Returns, but Carson Wentz Could Bolster QB Depth in New York's Ambitious Playoff Quest.

The New York Jets are making moves to bolster their quarterback lineup, bringing back a familiar face in Geno Smith. The Jets are reportedly sending a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for Smith and a 2026 seventh-round pick.

This marks a significant return for Smith, who began his NFL journey with the Jets back in 2013. Reflecting on the move, Smith shared with NFL Network, “It’s a full circle moment, coming back to where it all started.

I’m eager to reconnect with the team, coaches, and fans.”

Smith’s 2025 season had its ups and downs, completing 67.4% of his passes for 3,025 yards, with 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. Despite Smith’s return, Jets General Manager Darren Mougey is still on the hunt for additional quarterback talent. Reports from SNY’s Connor Hughes suggest that Carson Wentz is on the Jets’ radar as a potential No. 2 quarterback for the 2026 season.

Wentz’s connection with Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich could be a deciding factor. The duo previously worked together with the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles, where Wentz thrived under Reich’s guidance. During their time in Philadelphia, Wentz posted a standout season with 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions, emerging as an MVP frontrunner before an ACL injury cut his season short.

For the Jets, opting for a seasoned backup like Wentz could be a strategic move, especially if they decide not to draft a quarterback this April. Wentz’s familiarity with Reich’s playbook could prove invaluable in helping the team adapt and succeed.
