Aaron Glenn trimmed the suspense a bit on Friday, ruling out two Jets and leaving two more in doubtful territory as New York heads into Sunday afternoon’s opener in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt reported that Glenn ruled out edge Joseph Ossai and veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick. Neither had been practicing this week, so the call fit the trend line.
Glenn also said rookie cornerback D’Angelo Ponds and former All-Pro kick returner Kene Nwangwu were doubtful, with Ponds dealing with a calf injury and Nwangwu listed with a back issue. Ponds’ situation has been building for a while, since he still hasn’t managed a full week of practice after being sidelined all summer. Nwangwu, though, was the surprise name in the mix.
Glenn sounded encouraged by where Ossai is headed, calling him "week-to-week." He said:
"Joe Ossai is getting better and better. Again, I see he was week to week.
I'm looking for him to see how he's gonna operate in practice next week. And hopefully he'll be able to do that."
That’s at least some good news for the Jets, who had projected Ossai as a starter on the edge opposite David Bailey coming into the summer. With Ossai unavailable, Kingsley Enagbare should see plenty of run, with Will McDonald mixed in as well.
Glenn’s comments on Nwangwu and Ponds suggested different kinds of concerns. Nwangwu appeared to pick up the back injury at Thursday’s practice, while Ponds sounds physically close but still short on the reps needed to be trusted in game action.
"Two other guys that are doubtful, Kene. Kene had a back yesterday.
We'll see how he's gonna operate today in practice. And also, Ponds.
I love where he's at when it comes to his physical. But man, just the part of him not getting as much reps as he can.
He'll be doubtful when it comes to that. And then everybody else that we talked about, they're ready to go.
So I look forward to seeing those guys go out there and play."
Taken together, it was a fairly upbeat injury update from Glenn. The four players he mentioned are unlikely to be active for the opener, but the bigger takeaway is that the Jets appear set to have Breece Hall and Kenyon Sadiq available, which matters plenty for an offense trying to hit the ground running.
