Jets Ended The Skid But Created A Bigger Question

Despite offensive struggles, the NY Jets capitalized on defensive resilience and special teams errors to clinch a much-needed win over the Cleveland Browns.

It wasn’t clean, but the New York Jets found exactly what they needed on Sunday: a win.

After dropping three straight, the Jets snapped the skid with a 17-12 grind over the Cleveland Browns, a game that never got comfortable for either side and came down to the final defensive stands.

The start belonged to New York’s defense. On the first play, Kingsley Enagbare set the tone with a tackle for loss, and Jarvis Brownlee Jr. and David Bailey followed with quick stops near the line of scrimmage.

That opening three-and-out gave the Jets’ offense a chance to strike first, and Geno Smith did just that with Garrett Wilson as his main target. Wilson caught three passes for 70 yards on four targets, finishing the series with a 32-yard touchdown that put New York ahead 7-0.

Cleveland answered with a long march, as Deshaun Watson guided a 12-play, 67-yard drive that stalled inside the 10 when Brownlee’s blitz helped force a field goal try. Andre Szmyt knocked in the 25-yarder to make it 7-3 with 3:30 left in the first quarter. Szmyt added another field goal in the second quarter, this one from 41 yards, trimming the Jets’ edge to 7-6 with 10:14 left before halftime.

New York still carried that one-point lead into the break, but the offense couldn’t create separation after the restart. The Jets went to punt on their first possession of the second half, and Cleveland briefly seemed ready to flip the game when it moved into New York territory.

Braelon Allen’s 18-yard run helped push the Jets back into the red zone, but the drive ended with former Jet Quincy Williams forcing his third fumble of the day, stripping Kenyon Sadiq. For the first time, Cleveland came up with the loose ball and took over at its own seven.

That takeaway didn’t lead to points, and the Browns wound up punting back. The Jets then cashed in on a 54-yard Jason Sanders field goal in the rain, stretching the lead to 10-6 with 14:37 left in the fourth quarter.

David Bailey delivered another key swing on Cleveland’s next drive, picking up his third sack to force yet another Browns punt. That pushed his season total to five sacks through his first five NFL games.

Cleveland still wasn’t done. On a third-and-long, Watson hit rookie wide receiver Denzel Boston for a 29-yard touchdown after Boston got behind Brandon Stephens, who had also been flagged earlier in the series. The Browns missed the extra point, but they still moved in front 12-10 with 6:15 to play.

The Jets had a chance to answer and let it slip away. Isaiah Williams gave them good field position with a strong return, but Carson Schwesinger came free on a blitz and knocked the ball loose from Smith, and Cleveland recovered.

New York’s defense bailed them out again. The Browns had to punt, then botched the snap on the next exchange, with Corey Bojorquez unable to handle a high snap. That handed the Jets the ball deep in Cleveland territory, and Allen turned it into the decisive score, breaking loose for a 22-yard touchdown run to put New York ahead 17-12 with 3:01 left.

From there, the Jets’ defense finished the job. It forced another punt, and when the offense gave the ball back with a little more than a minute remaining, the defense delivered again to close out the final Browns push and preserve the win.

The result lifts the Jets to 2-3 heading into next week’s matchup with the New England Patriots in Foxborough.

Jets Face Another Injury Test As One Late Decision Looms

Another week, another test of depth for a Jets roster that has spent much of the early season juggling injuries. New York and Cleveland released their inactive lists for Sundays Week 5 matchup, and the Jets will be without Breece Hall, Adonai Mitchell, Dylan Parham, Kiko Mauigoa, Nahshon Wright and Nate Lynn, a collection of absences that trims options on offense, along the line and on defense as the team tries to stay afloat.

The bigger late twist centers on Will McDonald, who was limited on Friday and remains a game-time decision. With several players already unavailable and a few other statuses still being monitored closer to kickoff, the Jets are once again waiting until the last possible moment to see how much of their pass-rush plan will be intact against a Browns team dealing with its own injury issues. Former Jet Quincy Williams Just Made Week 5 Personal

Quincy Williams is already turning a routine Week 5 meeting into something with a little more edge. After leaving the Jets in free agency, the former linebacker settled in with the Browns on a new deal and has looked sharper in his new home, even if coverage remains the area that still gets exposed at times. From New Yorks side, this is one of those familiar reminders that a player who once helped anchor the middle of the defense can quickly become a problem on the other sideline.

Williams has made it clear the matchup carries extra meaning for him, too. The Jets did not bring him back, and he has embraced the chance to make them pay for it when the teams line up in Week 5. It adds a little more heat to a game that already has enough of it, and it puts one more former Jet in the spotlight with something to prove. [Read more 🡒]

Jets Win Still Left Fans Debating Geno Smith And Garrett Wilson

The Jets finally got back in the win column in Week 5, snapping a three-game losing streak and offering a reminder of how much talent still sits on the roster. Garrett Wilson was the most reliable piece on offense, finishing with seven catches for 104 yards and a touchdown, while the defense had enough impact plays to carry the day despite a rough overall showing.

Even with the victory, the conversation afterward kept circling back to Geno Smith and Wilson, a familiar split between optimism and unease. The Jets piled up 10 penalties for 102 yards, which made the margin feel a lot thinner than a win should, and Smiths uneven afternoon left the team searching for a cleaner answer at quarterback even after a productive day from its top receiver.
