Sports Illustrated recently slotted the Jets at No. 3 among all 32 NFL draft classes, a mark that only the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens topped. That kind of placement makes sense given how the Jets approached the draft. General manager Darren Mougey had a chance to overhaul the roster, and he used it to make three first-round picks. Those three bring value at spots that matter for the long haul, and all three carry the kind of upside that can change how a roster looks down the line. Sports Illustrated also gave a nod to second-round defensive back D'Angelo Ponds, noting his high football IQ and infectious energy even with size concerns attached to his profile.
None of that guarantees anything once the games start. Draft grades are one thing; proving it in pads is another. Still, getting this kind of recognition before training camp even opens says plenty about the direction the Jets seem to be taking under Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn.
The real test comes later. If Bailey turns into a disruptive pass rusher, Sadiq develops into the playmaking tight end the offense has been missing, Cooper becomes a dependable target, and Ponds beats the odds, this class could end up looking every bit as good as it does right now.
