Jets Defense Is Walking Into A Raiders Quarterback Mess

With the Raiders struggling and facing questions at quarterback, can the Jets capitalize on their Week 8 matchup to turn the tide at MetLife Stadium?

The Jets are closing in on a Week 8 meeting with the Raiders on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, and the national consensus is clear: Las Vegas is sliding.

Across the latest power rankings, the Raiders keep landing in the middle of the pack, but the tone around them is getting sharper by the week. They’ve lost four straight after opening the season 3-0, and plenty of analysts are now circling the same question - whether it’s almost time for Fernando Mendoza to take over.

USA TODAY has the Raiders at No. 14, while Pro Football Talk slots them at No. 19.

Bleacher Report puts them at No. 20, FOX Sports also has them at No.

20, CBS Sports lists them at No. 22, and ESPN places them at No. 22 as well. The Athletic has them lowest among this group at No.

The Athletic noted that Las Vegas is coming off a 35-21 loss to the Rams, its fourth straight defeat, and highlighted the growing quarterback chatter around Mendoza. Kirk Cousins threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns in that loss, but the Raiders still couldn’t get much going on the ground. The Athletic pointed to the possibility that if Las Vegas drops again in New York, the questions about Mendoza will only get louder.

Bleacher Report called the Raiders’ strong start to their 2026 campaign a thing of the past, saying the team “turned into a pumpkin and lost all four games in the month.” The site also said Mendoza’s eventual move into the lineup is now a serious consideration, though Las Vegas may be stuck waiting if the organization believes he needs more time. Bleacher Report also noted the Raiders face four of the league’s top 12 defenses over their next five games, not including Denver’s unit.

CBS Sports kept it simple: after three straight wins to begin the season, the Raiders have now dropped four in a row, and while it “wasn’t because of Kirk Cousins,” it “might be time for Fernando Mendoza.”

FOX Sports echoed the same theme. It pointed out that the Raiders’ losses have come against the Chiefs, Patriots, Bills and Rams, and said those teams are clearly “way out of the Raiders’ league.”

FOX also noted the upcoming stretch - the Jets, then the 49ers, Seahawks, Broncos and Browns - and added that it “would be a bad time to switch to rookie QB Fernando Mendoza right now.” FOX included one stat that jumps off the page: after starting 3-0, the Raiders have allowed an NFL-worst 35.75 points per game during the four-game skid.

ESPN had the Raiders at No. 22 and named Cousins its “Best offseason addition.” The outlet said Cousins has played well enough that Mendoza has had to wait longer than expected, and added that the 38-year-old ranks third in passing yards with 1,877 and first in touchdown passes with 16.

ESPN also noted that his limitations, including arm strength and mobility, have shown up. Even so, coach Klint Kubiak confirmed Cousins will start in Week 8 against the Jets.

Pro Football Talk’s assessment was short and blunt: “Mendoza time is coming.”

That’s the backdrop the Jets are walking into this week. The Raiders may still be ranked in the teens and low 20s, but the noise around their quarterback situation is only getting louder.

Jets Passing Debate Now Centers On One Garrett Wilson Question

Garrett Wilsons frustration with his role in the passing game has become part of the conversation around the Jets offense, and offensive coordinator Frank Reich is not trying to smooth it over. Reich described the receivers desire for more targets as healthy tension while defending a plan that spreads the ball around instead of locking onto one option, even as Wilson has remained the teams most productive pass catcher this season with 37 receptions for 444 yards and two touchdowns.

The latest flashpoint came in the recent game against Miami, where the Jets again tried to balance getting Wilson involved with keeping the rest of the passing game active. Reich pointed to how attention on Wilson can create chances elsewhere, including for Omar Cooper Jr., but the larger issue remains the same for a team that has struggled to win games: finding an offense that keeps its top receiver engaged without making the attack too predictable. Jets Lose T'Vondre Sweat And Now Face A Tough Timeline

The Jets have lost another piece in the middle of their defense, placing defensive tackle TVondre Sweat on injured reserve and forcing him out for at least the next four games. Sweat had become a steady presence in the rotation, appearing in seven games and contributing 17 combined tackles along with two tackles for loss before the setback.

For a defense built around controlling the line of scrimmage, the timing is less than ideal, and it leaves the Jets with a short-term hole to patch in Aaron Glenns 3-4 front. The club still believes Sweat can be back later this season, but the immediate challenge is finding enough stability inside while he works his way toward a return. [Read more 🡒]

Jets Just Sent A Clear Message In The Will McDonald Debate

Will McDonald IV has become one of the more interesting names on the Jets roster as the season has worn on, and not just because of his play. According to Sports Illustrateds Albert Breer, there has been significant trade interest in the edge rusher, a sign that other teams still see value in a player whose production has not matched the expectation around him this year.

For the Jets, though, the message has been clear. They have not moved him, and with his fifth-year option already exercised, McDonald remains under team control through 2027. Even with the numbers not jumping off the page, New York appears intent on riding out the rest of the season with him in the mix rather than turning a draft pick into a short-term fix. [Read more 🡒]
