Could Allen Lazard Land in Pittsburgh? Here’s Why the Fit Makes Sense
Allen Lazard’s time with the New York Jets may have come to a quiet end, but don’t be surprised if his next chapter lands him in a playoff hunt - and possibly in Pittsburgh.
The veteran wide receiver was a clear favorite of Aaron Rodgers during their time together in Green Bay, and that connection followed them to New York. While Lazard’s production dipped with the Jets, his chemistry with Rodgers has always been a defining part of his NFL story. And even if he’s not the same dynamic playmaker he once was, there’s still reason to believe he could bring value to a team looking for receiver depth - especially one making a postseason push.
Enter the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Fresh off a statement win over the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football, the Steelers are surging at the right time. They’ve put themselves in a strong position to not only secure a playoff berth but potentially take the AFC North crown. With upcoming matchups against the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, and a season finale against the Baltimore Ravens, the road ahead is tough - but navigable.
And that’s where Lazard could come into play.
Pittsburgh’s offense has been solid, but the wide receiver room still feels a bit thin on the outside. Calvin Austin III is currently second among Steelers wideouts in receiving yards with 309, which speaks to both his development and the team’s need for more consistent production from the position. Adding a veteran like Lazard wouldn’t necessarily shift the entire offense, but it could give them a reliable, big-bodied target who knows how to find space - especially in red zone situations.
It’s worth noting that Lazard still managed to put up six touchdowns and 530 receiving yards in 2024, despite a rocky season in New York. Those aren’t eye-popping numbers, but they’re respectable - particularly for a player who wasn’t consistently featured. In Pittsburgh’s system, with a strong run game and a defense that gives the offense chances, Lazard could find himself in high-leverage situations where his experience pays off.
There’s also the intangible factor. Lazard has been in playoff battles.
He’s played in big games. He’s familiar with what it takes to win down the stretch.
For a Steelers team that’s young in some key offensive spots, bringing in a veteran presence like Lazard could help steady the ship as the postseason nears.
Of course, not every fan in Pittsburgh is going to be thrilled about the idea. Lazard’s time with the Jets didn’t exactly inspire confidence, and expectations would need to be managed. But this isn’t about signing a WR1 - it’s about adding depth, size, and experience to a team that’s trying to win now.
The Steelers have shown they’re willing to make smart, low-risk moves to bolster the roster. If Lazard is available and ready to contribute, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him in black and gold before the season wraps up.
And if he can replicate even a portion of his 2024 production in Pittsburgh? That might be just enough to give the Steelers another weapon as they look to make noise in January.
