The Tennessee Titans may head into their Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets short-handed at linebacker, and that’s a spot the Jets already had an edge in.
The concern centers on Cedric Gray, who was placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol after a UTV accident over the weekend. In a Monday statement, the Titans said, “Over the weekend, Cedric Gray was involved in a UTV accident in Tennessee and sustained a concussion and minor injuries. We look forward to Cedric returning to the field soon and in full health when he clears the NFL’s concussion protocol,”
A report from Turron Davenport also noted that it was not a case of reckless driving and that no alcohol was involved.
Gray is listed as one of Tennessee’s starting linebackers next to veteran Cody Barton, so his status matters. If he can’t go, the Titans would be looking at James Williams Sr., who has not yet established himself as a dependable NFL starter, and second-round rookie Anthony Hill Jr. That would leave Robert Saleh’s defense in a tougher spot.
The numbers from Gray’s 2025 season show why his availability is a big deal. He finished seventh among 88 qualified linebackers in Pro Football Focus’ overall grade at 78.9. His 92.7 run-defense grade ranked second at the position, and his 117 solo tackles were the third most among linebackers, according to PFF.
For Gray to play Sunday, he has to clear the concussion protocol, and that’s no quick fix. Players must first be symptom-free and pass cognitive testing before moving through a progression that includes moderate conditioning, monitored weight training, non-contact drills and then full practice.
With less than a week before kickoff, that’s a lot to ask. If Gray can’t get through it in time, Tennessee would be missing one of its key defenders in a position group that already looks vulnerable.
