Jets Could Add Two Blue-Chip Defenders To Their Rebuild

With the 2027 NFL Draft on the horizon, several defensive prodigies are poised to shake up the top 10, challenging the supremacy of quarterbacks and top offensive prospects.

The top of the 2027 NFL Draft board still belongs to the quarterbacks and Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith, but the defensive class is starting to press its case.

With the NFL season past the midway point, the current order offers a few teams a chance to land a true difference-maker on defense. The Los Angeles Chargers sit at No. 1 at 0-7, and while they’re not expected to pass on Smith if he’s there, the draft’s defensive names are getting harder to ignore. Texas edge rusher Colin Simmons and Notre Dame cornerback Leonard Moore headline that group, and both are in the mix to land inside the top 10.

The current order entering Week 9 has the Chargers at No. 1, followed by Tennessee, Miami, Indianapolis (NY Jets), Philadelphia, the NY Jets, Houston, New Orleans, Washington and Dallas (NY Jets) in the top 10. That setup creates a few especially interesting landing spots for defenders.

Tennessee is the clearest one. The Titans hold the No. 2 pick and are positioned to come away with a defensive centerpiece after the blockbuster trade that sent Jeffery Simmons to the Chicago Bears. That’s where Colin Simmons enters the picture as a possible new anchor for the front.

Philadelphia also jumps out near the top of the board. The Eagles sit at No. 5 and could be hunting for an impact edge rusher if their season keeps trending the wrong way through 2026. South Carolina’s Dylan Stewart is one name tied to that spot, and he’d give Philadelphia another major weapon on the edge.

The Jets are sitting on a pile of draft capital and could use it to remake their defense in a hurry. They currently own three picks in the first 10, including No. 6 and No. 10 in this projection.

At No. 6, New York lands Leonard Moore, and at No. 10 it takes Georgia linebacker Chris Cole.

That would give the Jets a chance to pair a quarterback of the future with a shutdown corner and a versatile linebacker in one draft.

New Orleans also shows up in the defensive mix at No. 8, where Ole Miss defensive tackle Will Echoles is projected to land. He’s one of several defenders who could push into the top 10, along with Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV and Chris Cole.

Here’s the Week 9 projection for five defensive stars and where they could go:

No. 2: Tennessee Titans: Colin Simmons, EDGE, Texas

No. 5: Philadelphia Eagles: Dylan Stewart, EDGE, South Carolina

No. 6: New York Jets: Leonard Moore, CB, Notre Dame

No. 8: New Orleans Saints: Will Echoles, DL, Ole Miss

No. 10: New York Jets: Chris Cole, LB, Georgia

The most intriguing fit in that group may be Stewart to Philadelphia. The Eagles already have Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt off the edge, but Stewart could become the alpha dog in that room and line up next to Jalen Carter in the middle. That kind of front would be a problem for opposing offenses.

Simmons gives Tennessee a potential defensive cornerstone. Moore gives the Jets a shutdown option.

Echoles can create havoc up front. Cole brings versatility.

And if this class keeps building momentum, the defensive side of the ball could end up changing the shape of the top 10.

Jets Suddenly Pulled Into Giants Trade Deadline Scenario

With the NFL trade deadline closing in, the market around Jonathan Taylor is starting to draw in more than one New York team. Taylor is still with the Indianapolis Colts, but he is widely expected to be moved, and the Giants are reportedly among the clubs pushing hardest to land him as they look for help in the backfield.

If the Giants miss out on Taylor, another name has surfaced in the conversation: Breece Hall. The Jets have said they do not plan to trade him, which makes the idea more of a speculative fallback than a real indication of movement, but it is a reminder of how quickly deadline chatter can spread once a premium running back becomes available. Jets Suddenly Have A Breece Hall Problem They Didn't Expect

Breece Halls injury absence has given the Jets a much clearer look at Braelon Allen, and the rookie has made the most of it. Over the past five games, Allen has forced his way into the conversation as a real part of the offense, showing the kind of power and consistency that can change how a coaching staff thinks about its backfield rotation.

Now the challenge is less about finding carries than figuring out how to distribute them once Hall is back. Hall and Allen bring different skill sets to the same position, and the Jets will have to sort out how to keep both involved without dulling either ones impact. It is the kind of good problem teams hope for, even if it comes with a little extra pressure on the staff to make it work. [Read more 🡒]

Aaron Glenn Takes A Stand In Jets Breece Hall-Braelon Allen Debate

Breece Halls absence has forced the Jets to sort through their backfield without much room for ambiguity, and Aaron Glenn has already made his preference clear. Even with Braelon Allen turning heads while Hall has been sidelined by a quad injury, Glenn confirmed Hall will remain the teams starting running back once he is back in the mix.

Hall has not played since Week 3, and there is still no timetable for his return, which leaves the Jets navigating a shaky stretch with a 2-6 record and the Chiefs up next. Glenn, who recently received a five-year contract extension, is trying to keep the depth chart steady while the team waits to see when its top back can actually get back on the field. [Read more 🡒]
