The Jets’ most intriguing camp battle may be unfolding on the outside, where second-year cornerback Azareye’h Thomas and veteran addition Nahshon Wright are fighting for the starting job opposite Brandon Stephens.
New York spent a third-round pick on Thomas in the 2025 NFL Draft, and that investment makes him the likeliest candidate to seize the role if he keeps stacking strong days. Wright, though, brings a different kind of threat. He arrived from the Chicago Bears with five interceptions, which is five more than any Jets defender had in 2025.
The early part of camp leaned Wright’s way. But the last few days have opened the door for Thomas.
According to the New York Post’s Brian Costello, Wright has missed the last two days of practice because of a hip injury. That absence has given Thomas a chance to work more with the first-team defense, and he appears to be making the most of it.
Sports Illustrated’s Nick Faria noted that Thomas made his presence felt with a breakup against Garrett Wilson.
"On the outside, New York loved what it saw. Azareye'h Thomas, the third-round pick from last year, recorded a pass breakup against Garrett Wilson that saw him record excellent coverage on a deep route."
That kind of play only sharpens a competition that figures to keep swinging back and forth as camp continues. Wright should be eager to get back on the field, because every missed practice matters in a race this close.
The two corners bring different strengths to the table. Thomas looks like the cleaner coverage player, while Wright can be more erratic in coverage but has shown a better feel for getting his hands on the ball.
What Aaron Glenn and Brian Duker value most will likely decide the outcome, and the presence of Stephens suggests coverage may carry extra weight. Even so, there’s a long way to go before the Jets make any final call on the spot. For now, the battle is still very much alive.
