The Jets are heading into training camp with three players already working through injury designations.
New York announced that wide receiver Tim Patrick and edge rusher Tyler Baron have been placed on the PUP list, while defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat landed on the NFI list because of a hamstring injury.
There is at least some encouraging news on both Patrick and Sweat. Per The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt, Patrick “isn’t expected to be out long,” and Sweat’s hamstring issue “is not considered serious.”
Patrick’s exact injury wasn’t specified, but his recent medical history is hard to ignore. He missed the 2023 and 2024 seasons after suffering an ACL tear and then a torn Achilles in consecutive years. Even so, the expectation is that he won’t be sidelined for too long.
Baron’s situation is tougher for his roster outlook. The 2025 fifth-round pick was already fighting an uphill battle after a disappointing rookie season, and now the PUP designation adds another obstacle as he tries to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.
Sweat, meanwhile, looks like a player the Jets will be careful with. The team acquired him for Jermaine Johnson, and he’s expected to play a major role on the defensive line this season.
Over his first two years in the league, Sweat has built a reputation as an elite run stopper, which makes his presence important for New York’s front four. Since the hamstring issue isn’t considered serious, the Jets have reason to take the long view rather than rush him back.
Rookies reported to Florham Park on Saturday, veterans are due Wednesday, and the first practice is set for Thursday.
