The Jets still have a quarterback depth issue, and one veteran name just disappeared from the board.
Josh Dobbs has signed with the Detroit Lions, according to his agent Mike McCartney, after Teddy Bridgewater’s retirement opened that door. For New York, it means one fewer experienced option as the team continues sorting out life behind Geno Smith.
Smith is locked in as the starter, and the Jets made that clear when they brought him in to run the offense. They also used one of their fourth-round picks in April on Cade Klubnik, giving themselves a young arm with some upside. But the roster still has a gap where a dependable No. 2 should be.
That spot has not been filled yet, and there’s no guarantee the Jets will add anyone before the season gets going. General manager Darren Mougey has kept the door open, though. At a media availability before training camp, he made it clear the team is still watching the veteran market.
"On the possibility of adding a veteran backup QB, Mougey says he’s excited to see what Klubnik does with his reps. Adds that he’s always checking out vet markets at all positions," shared ESPN's Rich Cimini.
For now, the Jets appear to be giving Klubnik a chance to separate himself from Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook and claim the backup job. But reports of uneven work in training camp could push the team back toward free agency if that competition doesn’t sort itself out quickly.
If New York does go shopping, Jimmy Garoppolo stands out as the most proven name left. The former San Francisco 49ers starter was most recently backing up Matt Stafford with the Los Angeles Rams, and he brings 64 career starts to the table.
Whether he’d actually choose the Jets is another question. But with Dobbs gone, the list of veteran possibilities is shrinking, and Klubnik - or whoever else is in that mix - has only a few weeks left to convince the Jets they can handle the job behind Smith.
