The Jets have spent the summer sending a clear message about Omar Cooper Jr., even if they never said it out loud: they’re not looking elsewhere.
That matters because Cooper, the rookie wideout and No. 30 pick, has mostly operated under the radar while Garrett Wilson and Adonai Mitchell drew the bulk of the attention. Isaiah Williams also climbed into the conversation as a real breakout candidate, and he’s widely expected to split No. 3 receiver reps with Cooper against the Titans on Sunday.
Still, the bigger takeaway from New York’s post-cut decisions is the confidence it showed in Cooper. Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey did not chase outside help at receiver after roster cuts, and the Jets were never tied to names like Cedric Tillman, Van Jefferson or Jalin Hyatt as a practice-squad add or depth option. That silence says plenty.
It’s not hard to see why the Jets would be invested in Cooper. They traded back into the first round to grab him at No. 30, and they could have simply stayed at No. 34 and waited to see if he was still there. Instead, they made the move to get him.
For a team coming off 3-14 and trying to climb out of a 16-year playoff drought, that kind of bet carries weight. Given the strength of schedule and the state of the roster, no one would have blamed Mougey for adding another receiver in the aftermath of final cuts. But the Jets’ actions pointed in the opposite direction: they believe Cooper can help this season.
Cooper didn’t light up training camp or the preseason, though he did flash with a 26-yard catch-and-run against the Buccaneers last month. On Thursday, he said the lack of targets is the “nature of football.”
He also revealed that he’ll wear No. 11, the number he wore in high school, instead of the No. 83 he had during the summer. For the Jets, the number on the jersey matters a lot less than what Cooper does once the games count.
