Jets Added A Defensive Piece Who Comes With One Big Catch

An NFL strategist contends that for Kingsley Enagbare to thrive with the Jets' remodeled defense, a tactical approach tailored to his strengths is essential.

The Jets didn’t just go shopping for names this offseason. They went looking for answers, especially up front, after another year of getting pushed around against the run and coming up short in the pass rush. That search led them to former Green Bay Packers edge Kingsley Enagbare on a one-year deal, a move that looks less like a splash and more like a very specific bet on a very specific player.

Freddie Boston, the site expert at FanSided’s Green Bay Packers site Lombardi Ave, sees Enagbare as exactly what he’s always been: useful, but only if he’s deployed the right way.

"Kingsley Enagbare isn't a flashy player, but he carved out a niche as a reliable run defender in Green Bay," Boston said. "What the Jets won't get from Enagbare is consistent pass-rushing prowess.

His pressure tally lagged significantly behind his teammates' last season. Lukas Van Ness had more pressures despite playing seven fewer games."

That’s the tradeoff with Enagbare. He’s not arriving in New York to headline anything, but he does bring four years of steady availability, having played in all 68 possible games over that stretch. The former fifth-round pick has produced 11.5 sacks and 31 quarterback hits in that span, numbers that won’t light up a billboard but do make sense for a player filling a narrower lane.

And that lane matters for the Jets, who have made no secret of their desire to build a defense that can shut down the run at an elite level. Enagbare joins a line that also includes trade acquisition T'Vondre Sweat, free agent addition David Onyemata, and draftee Darrell Jackson Jr.

On the edge, the Jets are leaning on No. 2 pick David Bailey and former first-rounder Will McDonald. The latter drew attention as a top pick, but not because of his run defense, while Bailey has been described as the league’s worst run defender for years on end.

That’s why Enagbare’s role could end up being more important than flashy. He gives the Jets a dependable body who can help on the edge, bring some experience to a thin room, and fit into the kind of assignment where he’s been most effective. For a team trying to change its defensive identity, that sort of player has real value.

Jets Still Have One Defensive Weak Spot They Cannot Ignore

The Jets have spent plenty of time trying to shore up the defense, but one spot still looks vulnerable enough to keep the front office shopping. Linebacker depth has become a real concern, with age and possible regression around the current group pushing New York to at least consider outside help rather than hoping the room sorts itself out on its own.

Several veteran names fit the kind of short-term fix the Jets could use, including Jerome Baker, Matt Milano and Elandon Roberts. Bobby Okereke also belongs on the radar, though he may not be eager to come in as a backup, and Milano brings the kind of upside that always tempts teams even if his availability makes the calculation a tricky one. Jets Trade Idea Targets A Fix For Their Biggest Defensive Hole

The Jets have spent the offseason trying to patch the middle of their defense, and a new trade proposal points them toward a linebacker who could help stabilize that area without requiring a major investment. SirVocea Dennis has been viewed as an intriguing fit because of his range and upside, and the idea is simple enough: add a young defender who could grow alongside Jamien Sherwood while giving New York another option in a spot that has been a concern.

It is still just a speculative concept, not a confirmed move, but it speaks to where the Jets are right now. They have been active in trying to reshape the roster, and a low-cost deal for a player who might be squeezed out in Tampa Bay would fit the kind of opportunistic approach teams often take when they believe a clear need is staring them in the face.
