But the early read around the league is pretty clear: this doesn’t look like a move New York is likely to make.
That’s a rough turn for a Giants team trying to get its footing in Week 3, especially with John Harbaugh trying to make his first real impression as the new head coach in New York. Dart’s injury has forced the organization to think ahead fast, and the focus has already shifted to the 2026-27 season.
McCarthy, meanwhile, has become a speculative option because he’s not starting for the Vikings and is currently just waiting on the bench. Even so, the people around the league who’ve weighed in don’t see the fit.
Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post wrote on X on Wednesday, "Never say never. But J.J. McCarthy is one available QB I cannot see #Giants pursuing."
Dan Duggan of The Athletic echoed that view in a feature published Thursday. He pointed out that the Giants did a deep dive on McCarthy before the 2024 draft, when they ultimately used the sixth pick on Malik Nabers instead. "That type of pedigree sticks with a player, even when the start of his career has been as rocky as McCarthy's."
Duggan also noted that McCarthy is coming off a quarterback battle he lost to Kyler Murray and is now third on the Vikings’ depth chart behind Carson Wentz. In his view, even a modest trade package would be too much. "even parting with one of the 2027 sixth-rounders or a late-round pick in a future draft for McCarthy seems wasteful. He'd need to come in and learn a new offense on the fly during the season."
For now, the buzz doesn’t line up with the logic. McCarthy is a name to watch only because the Giants need answers, but the reporting so far suggests this one is fading rather than building.
