Here's When The J.J. McCarthy Giants Era Officially Begins

Could J.J. McCarthy finally take the field for the Giants in Week 9, or will Jameis Winston's performance delay the rookie's anticipated debut?

The Giants didn’t trade a 2027 fifth-round pick to Minnesota to keep J.J. McCarthy glued to the sideline forever.

Sooner or later, the 23-year-old is going to get his shot in East Rutherford. The only real question is when.

Right now, Jameis Winston has the nod for Week 4 against Arizona, and that makes the timeline messy. With Jaxson Dart out for the rest of the season, the Giants need to decide whether to keep rolling with Winston or start easing in McCarthy, the former No. 10 overall pick.

There’s a path where Winston simply holds the job the rest of the way. If he keeps winning and avoids the kind of mistakes that would force a change, the Giants can ride that out. But after seven-plus quarters of relief work from Dart, it’s fair to think that kind of clean run probably won’t last for all 14 remaining games.

The schedule doesn’t offer a clean opening before the Week 8 bye, either. Week 5 in Washington is an awkward place to make McCarthy’s first start, especially with the Giants sitting at 1-0 in the division and the Commanders without Jayden Daniels. Winston against Marcus Mariota also brings together the first two picks of the 2015 NFL Draft, which is the sort of matchup that’s tough to bump aside.

Week 6 at home against New Orleans has some appeal, mostly because Winston would be facing one of his former teams. But the Saints and Tyler Shough have looked more competent than expected through three games, and that doesn’t exactly scream ideal spot for a first-time starter.

Then there’s Week 7 in Houston. The Texans are 0-3, but introducing McCarthy to DeMeco Ryans’ defense on the road right before the bye doesn’t sound like the cleanest launch point for the McCarthy era.

That keeps pointing everything toward Week 9.

The irony of “Nine” taking over in Week 9 is obvious, but the bigger draw is practical: the bye would give McCarthy more than a month to learn Matt Nagy’s offense, and the staff nearly two weeks to get him ready to start.

Philadelphia would be the first hurdle, and it’s not a soft landing spot. Even after the Eagles were blasted by third-stringer Case Keenum and the Bears, 27-7, on Monday night, that’s still a rough place for a new quarterback to make his first start.

If the Giants wait past that, Week 10 against Washington becomes the next natural option before a brutal run of Jaguars, Colts, 49ers and Seahawks. And if Winston keeps the offense moving and stacks wins, all of this could become a moot point.

There’s also a chance McCarthy starts showing up in specific packages before he gets the full job. His mobility gives Nagy something closer to the offense they originally built around Dart, so some early usage wouldn’t be a surprise.

For now, Week 9 is the number to keep in mind. If Winston is still fighting through his issues and the Giants head into the bye wanting a reset, that looks like the spot to turn the page and find out what they have in McCarthy.

Jets Enter Bears Game With Aaron Glenn Facing A Major Problem

Aaron Glenns first few weeks on the job have already featured the kind of injury churn that can test a new coaching staff, and the Week 4 trip to face the Chicago Bears brings another round of roster uncertainty. The Jets ruled out wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, running back Breece Hall, guard Dylan Parham, tight end Mason Taylor and linebacker Francisco Mauigoa, trimming depth on both sides of the ball as they try to keep the season moving in the right direction.

Hall and Parham were already expected to miss after the previous game, but Mitchell and Taylor had been in limbo for much of the week, leaving Glenn to sort through a lineup that keeps shifting late in the process. Edge rusher Kingsley Enagbare is also dealing with a knee injury and remains limited in practice, adding another question mark to a defense that can least afford to be thin going into a matchup with the Bears. Jets Fans May Not Be Done Hearing About Tom Brady Yet

Tom Bradys name keeps finding its way back into the conversation, even after his retirement following the 2022 season. In a recent interview, Lars Anderson, author of a Brady biography, suggested the seven-time Super Bowl winner may look back on the way his career ended and feel some regret, raising the kind of speculation that never really dies when Brady is involved.

For Jets fans, it is the sort of chatter that brings an old rival back into the frame, at least hypothetically, because any comeback discussion would immediately invite thoughts about scheduling and what it could mean for New York. Brady has not responded to the comments, and there is no real sign of a return, but the very fact the possibility is being floated is enough to keep the topic alive a little longer. [Read more 🡒]

Jets Defense Gets A Needed Boost At The Perfect Time

Minkah Fitzpatrick is set to rejoin the Jets for their Week 4 matchup with the Bears after missing time with a groin injury, giving New York a defensive presence it has been missing. He was a full participant in practice and said he is ready to go, a welcome development for a unit that has been looking for more takeaways lately.

Fitzpatricks return comes at a timely moment for a Jets defense that has had trouble creating interceptions, and his ability to track the ball could help change that. Against Chicago, the Jets will be counting on him not just to fill a spot, but to lift a secondary that needs a jolt. [Read more 🡒]
