Giants Hire OC That Has Jets Fans Doing Double Takes

As the Giants draw scrutiny for a puzzling coordinator hire, the Jets' pursuit of proven experience offers a surprising edge in New Yorks offensive arms race.

As the New York Jets continue their search for a veteran offensive coordinator, the decision-making process in Florham Park is drawing more scrutiny-especially now that their cross-town rivals have made a move of their own. But if you’re a Jets fan looking at the landscape, there’s actually reason to feel optimistic.

Let’s start with where things stand in New York. The Jets have wrapped up a second interview with Frank Reich, the former head coach of both the Colts and Panthers.

He’s one of three experienced play-callers in the mix, alongside Darrell Bevell and Greg Roman. All three bring years of NFL experience and a track record of guiding offenses through different eras and systems.

They’re not splashy hires, but they are steady hands-exactly the kind of presence a team like the Jets, with a young quarterback room and a defense built to win now, could use.

And while some Jets fans have voiced their frustration with the names in the mix, the recent hire by the New York Giants might offer a little perspective-and maybe even a sigh of relief.

The Giants, fresh off hiring John Harbaugh as their new head coach, made a surprising choice at offensive coordinator: Matt Nagy. Yes, that Matt Nagy-the former Bears head coach and, more recently, the offensive coordinator in Kansas City.

On paper, Nagy’s resume includes a Super Bowl appearance and years of working with Patrick Mahomes. But dig a little deeper, and the numbers tell a different story.

Under Nagy’s watch the past two seasons, the Chiefs’ offense slid into mediocrity. In 2024 and 2025, Kansas City finished in the middle of the pack-or worse-in key offensive categories like total points and yards.

Even during their 2024 Super Bowl run, it was the defense that carried the team, not the offense. That Super Bowl ended in a blowout loss, with the Chiefs’ offense sputtering on the biggest stage.

Compare that to the Eric Bieniemy era from 2018 to 2022, when Kansas City was lighting up the scoreboard and leading the league with 30.1 points per game. Under Nagy?

That number dropped to 21.9-ranking 19th in the league. That’s a significant decline, especially when you have one of the most talented quarterbacks in NFL history under center.

And it’s not just a Kansas City issue. Nagy’s four-year stint as the head coach in Chicago didn’t exactly inspire confidence either. The Bears finished 24th in scoring during his tenure, and the offense never found its rhythm, even with multiple quarterbacks and a few flashes of promise.

So while the Giants may have more offensive talent on paper-especially with a young passer like Jaxson Dart stepping in-there’s reason to question whether Nagy is the right guy to maximize that potential. If he couldn’t consistently deliver with Mahomes, what makes anyone think he’ll thrive with a rookie?

That brings us back to the Jets. Reich, Bevell, and Roman each bring a different flavor to the table, but all three have led productive offenses in the past.

Reich helped mold the Eagles’ Super Bowl-winning offense in 2017. Bevell has experience developing young quarterbacks and working in run-heavy systems.

Roman, meanwhile, built dynamic, ground-based attacks in both San Francisco and Baltimore, tailoring schemes around mobile quarterbacks and maximizing their strengths.

While none of these names are going to dominate headlines, they each offer a level of stability and adaptability that Nagy has struggled to demonstrate in recent years.

So yes, the Jets are still figuring things out. And yes, their offensive coordinator search hasn’t been without its fair share of skepticism. But when you look at the bigger picture-especially compared to what’s happening across town-Jets fans might be in a better spot than they think.
