Geno Smith Stuns Critics After New York Jets Trade Decision

Geno Smith embraces his return to the New York Jets, brushing off criticism and focusing on redemption and growth in his career.

The New York Jets' decision to bring Geno Smith back into the fold has sparked quite the conversation among NFL analysts and fans. Smith, who originally kicked off his NFL journey with the Jets back in 2013, isn't fazed by the mixed reactions.

Reflecting on his return, Smith shared, "Here I am at another pivotal point in my career, where I guess you could say they're writing me off again. I don’t really care too much about the outside noise, but I do understand that narratives are being created.

Not everyone's gonna be a fan of this move. There's gonna be naysayers as there always is, but who cares about them.

I'm looking forward to building with the people who believe, and those people are the ones I want to win for."

Smith's initial run with the Jets was rocky, posting a 12-18 record as a starter and accumulating 5,962 yards with 28 touchdowns against 36 interceptions. Despite those struggles, he’s embracing this second chance with open arms.

"It's super like this full-circle moment for me honestly," Smith expressed. "I can remember my last touchdown was to Quincy Enunwa right there in MetLife Stadium, playing the Ravens that day I tore my ACL.

That began my journey and it all led me back here where it all started. I thank God for the opportunity.

I thank the Jets for the opportunity."

After leaving New York, Smith found new life with the Seattle Seahawks, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2022 and 2023 and snagging the 2022 AP Comeback Player of the Year Award. Yet, his time with the Raiders in 2025 was far from ideal, leading the league with 17 interceptions and finishing with a 2-13 record.

"Wasn't my best year last year, and a lot of those things I take onus of," Smith admitted. "I own it myself.

I knew that there would be a change being made. Potentially, you know, could have probably stayed with the Raiders in a mentor role, but where I'm at in my career, I really believe I'm one of the better quarterbacks in the league, and I've got to go out there and prove it.

I wanted a team that was gonna believe in me and was gonna have my back, and how ironic that it turned out to be the Jets. When I got a chance to speak with coach Glenn, he laid out the plan for me.

From that point on, I knew this was somewhere I could consider."

Smith's return to the Jets is more than just a homecoming; it’s a chance to rewrite his narrative and prove his doubters wrong. With a fresh start and a familiar setting, he's ready to take on the challenge.
