The Giants are leaning hard into nostalgia with Odell Beckham Jr., but that doesn’t mean the move should send any real tremors through Philadelphia.
New York kept Beckham on its initial 53-man roster to open the 2026 season and even gave him back No. 13, the number he wore during his peak. For Giants fans, it’s a sentimental touch. For everyone else, it looks a lot more like a marketing flourish than a move built to change the balance of power.
Beckham’s resume still carries weight because the name does. But the production has been gone for a while.
The last time he topped 600 receiving yards in a season, Freddie Kitchens and Baker Mayfield were trying to steady the Browns, while Jordan Howard and Boston Scott were in the Eagles’ backfield. Since then, Beckham has dealt with major injuries, including one that wiped out his entire 2022 season.
He’ll turn 34 in November, and the burst that once made him special has clearly faded.
If the receiver were named Odell Jones, the reaction would probably be much colder. He’s an aging wideout who never truly lived off elite speed, and now he’s lost multiple steps.
Last season, he managed nine catches for one of the league’s worst offenses before that team underwent a complete rebuild. On paper, that’s not exactly a move that screams impact signing.
And the Beckham return doesn’t magically fix the Giants’ receiver situation, either. Malik Nabers is not guaranteed to be fully healthy, Malachi Fields is a raw rookie, and the rest of the depth chart behind Beckham is thin. Jaxson Dart is still a complete wild card, which only adds to the uncertainty.
That’s why this feels less like a serious football upgrade and more like a Giants throwback tour. Eagles fans don’t need to treat it as anything bigger than that. It’s the kind of move that lets New York relive 2015 for a moment, while Philadelphia keeps building toward a roster expected to compete for a championship.
