Derek Carr Teases NFL Return That Could Shift Free Agency Landscape

Derek Carrs potential NFL return is stirring speculation across the league, with multiple teams eyeing the veteran QB as a game-changing offseason addition.

Derek Carr Eyes NFL Return: Could a Comeback Shake Up the QB Market?

Just when you thought the quarterback carousel might slow down this offseason, Derek Carr is reportedly open to returning to the NFL-if the right situation presents itself. That’s according to NFL insiders Ian Rapoport, Mike Garafolo, and Tom Pelissero, who say the former Saints signal-caller hasn’t closed the door on suiting up again.

Carr, 34, last played in 2024 for the New Orleans Saints, where he put together a solid, if shortened, campaign. He completed 67.7% of his passes for 2,145 yards, 15 touchdowns, and just five interceptions across 10 games before a hand injury cut his season short.

Then came a bigger blow: a shoulder injury discovered in the offseason that ultimately led Carr to announce his retirement on May 10, 2025. That decision meant walking away from $30 million-a significant move that underscored the seriousness of his health concerns at the time.

But now, things might be shifting.

This isn’t the first time Carr’s name has surfaced since stepping away. The Bengals reportedly reached out after Joe Burrow went down with a turf toe injury, but Carr passed on the opportunity.

Cincinnati pivoted to Joe Flacco, acquiring the veteran in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. Still, the fact that Carr was even considered tells you how teams view his potential value-especially in a quarterback landscape that’s as fluid as ever.

If Carr does decide to return, the Saints still technically hold his rights, which could play a role in how any potential comeback unfolds. While New Orleans could use that leverage to secure a draft pick from a team looking to bring Carr aboard, reports suggest they wouldn’t stand in the way of a deal. That makes sense, considering the Saints appear to be moving forward with 2025 second-round pick Tyler Shough, who flashed real promise late last season.

Assuming Carr is made available, he’d instantly become one of the top quarterback targets on the market. Right now, the soon-to-be-former Falcons QB Kirk Cousins headlines the free agent class, with Packers backup Malik Willis also drawing interest. But Carr brings something different-veteran leadership, proven accuracy, and a track record of elevating offenses.

So where could he land?

Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins are expected to move on from Tua Tagovailoa, and Carr could be a strong fit in Miami.

With Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle stretching defenses and Devon Achane providing explosive support out of the backfield, Carr’s precision passing and calm under pressure could thrive in new offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik’s system. That’s a plug-and-play situation that could immediately return Miami to top-tier offensive status.

Minnesota Vikings
Another intriguing option: the Minnesota Vikings.

J.J. McCarthy struggled in his rookie year, completing just 57.6% of his passes with more interceptions (12) than games won.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell-who also calls the plays-needs a steady hand under center to stabilize the offense and get the most out of Justin Jefferson. The All-Pro wideout posted career lows in receiving yards (1,048) and touchdowns (two) last season, and that’s not a trend the Vikings can afford to continue.

If their offensive line, including Christian Darrisaw and Ryan Kelly, can stay healthy, Carr could be the veteran presence this offense needs.

Other Possibilities
The Jets and Cardinals have also been floated as potential suitors, but their current trajectories might make them less appealing destinations. Both teams are in uncertain spots when it comes to short-term contention, which could make them long shots in the Carr sweepstakes.

At this point, it’s all about fit. Carr isn’t looking to return just to fill a roster spot-he’s looking for a situation where he can win.

And while he’s been off the field for nearly a year, his arm talent, leadership, and football IQ haven’t gone anywhere. If the right team comes calling, don’t be surprised to see Derek Carr back under center next season.
