The New York Jets are turning back the clock in 2026 with some familiar faces returning to the roster. Geno Smith is set to take the reins as quarterback following a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. Meanwhile, linebacker Demario Davis is back in green, signing a two-year deal to bring his veteran presence and leadership to East Rutherford once more.
Davis, who began his career with the Jets and became an All-Pro with the New Orleans Saints, is placing his trust in head coach Aaron Glenn. Davis shared his optimism, saying, “Ships go into daylight because you hold on & hold steady through the storm.
… He has the vision, he has the mission. All we've got to do is hold this thing steady & we’re going to come out the other side & I think it’s going to shock the world.”
Davis' journey with the Jets started in 2012, and he spent four seasons with the team before a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns. His time with the Saints, however, was where he truly shined, earning a first-team All-Pro selection and four consecutive second-team honors. Glenn, who worked with Davis during his time as a defensive backs coach in New Orleans from 2016 to 2020, clearly sees the value in Davis' experience and leadership.
The Jets are looking to rebound from a challenging season, especially on the defensive side. Last season, the team struggled under Glenn's leadership, particularly in the secondary, where they failed to record a single interception. While Davis may not directly address that issue, his leadership is expected to be a catalyst for change.
In addition to bringing back Davis, the Jets are eyeing further defensive upgrades. With the second overall pick in the draft, they’re likely targeting an edge rusher, with prospects like Arvell Reese, David Bailey, or Rueben Bain Jr. in the mix. Glenn’s second season will feature a revamped defense, and improvement is essential for his continued tenure with the team.
As the Jets gear up for the new season, the blend of returning veterans and fresh talent could be the spark they need to turn things around. Fans will be watching closely to see if these moves can indeed "shock the world."
