Cade Klubnik Just Gave The Jets A Real Quarterback Question

Geno Smith's injury gives Cade Klubnik a chance to bolster his position and potentially secure a future starting role for the New York Jets.

Cade Klubnik made a strong first impression in the New York Jets’ preseason opener, and the rookie may get another chance to keep building on it if Geno Smith remains sidelined.

Klubnik started against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and handled the moment well, completing 5 of 7 passes for 56 yards. He also helped the Jets put together two scoring drives while filling in for Smith, who is still working through a left ankle injury.

That injury situation could keep Klubnik in the mix this week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn made it clear Smith’s status will depend on how he responds in practice.

"I want to see exactly how he feels coming out of this practice to see how we're going to continue to move forward," Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said.

The Jets took Klubnik with the 110th overall pick in the 2026 draft, a far cry from where he had been projected before the 2025 college football season. He had been viewed as one of the top 2026 draft prospects, but Clemson’s struggles, along with his own uneven season, pushed his stock down.

Even after that slide, Klubnik arrives with plenty of production on his résumé. He finished the 2025 college football season with 2,943 passing yards and 16 passing touchdowns, and his Clemson career ended with 10,123 passing yards and 73 passing touchdowns.

For now, Klubnik is also in a competition with Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe for the Jets’ No. 2 quarterback job. But if Smith can’t get right quickly, Klubnik could get a longer look sooner than expected.

Smith is trying to rebound in his second stint with the Jets after leading the NFL in interceptions last season with the Las Vegas Raiders. His best NFL stretch came with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 and 2023, when he made the Pro Bowl both years and won the 2022 AP Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Through his NFL career, Smith has thrown for 22,168 yards, 124 touchdowns and 89 interceptions, and he owns a 42-56-0 record as a starter.

Jets Projection Sends A Brutal Message About Aaron Glenn And Geno Smith

The Jets long-term outlook has drawn a sharp split between hope and timing, with ESPN analyst Seth Walder projecting a playoff return built more on what comes next than on the current setup around Aaron Glenn and Geno Smith. The encouraging part for New York is that the offense, outside of Smith, is young, which gives the roster a developmental runway that could matter if the pieces around it grow together.

Still, the projection comes with a clear warning for anyone expecting this exact regime to be the one that turns the corner. Walders forecast points to New York getting back to the postseason in 2027, and the path there does not run through Glenn as head coach or Smith as quarterback, which leaves the Jets with a future that looks promising in theory but uncertain in terms of who will actually lead it. Jets Rookie Omar Cooper Jr. Is Giving Fans A Reason To Pause

Isaiah Williams has been one of the more noticeable receivers in Jets training camp, but Omar Cooper Jr. has done enough to keep the conversation going. The rookie has flashed solid play and, just as importantly, a willingness to put in extra work after practice, staying on the field to catch additional passes while the competition at receiver takes shape.

Williams may have the edge for now, but Coopers approach is the kind that can narrow that gap over time. Training camp depth charts are fluid, and for a rookie trying to carve out a role, the combination of steady reps and visible dedication can matter as much as any single highlight. [Read more 🡒]

Jets Rookie D'Angelo Ponds Suddenly Has A Concerning Camp Problem

DAngelo Ponds entered camp with real buzz as a rookie cornerback the Jets expected to watch closely, but the early months of his pro career have been slowed by a calf injury that has kept him out of most of training camp and the preseason opener. For a young defensive back trying to build momentum in a crowded summer competition, every missed practice matters, especially when the team is trying to sort out who can be trusted on the back end.

The encouraging part for New York is that there has been no indication Ponds is headed to injured reserve, so the door remains open for him to get back into the mix before the regular season arrives. Still, the lack of a timetable leaves his status in a frustrating holding pattern, and it has already taken some shine off a player who was once viewed much more favorably in rookie evaluations.
