The New York Jets came out of Week 2 with the kind of loss that lingers, but Azareye’h Thomas gave them something real to hang onto.
Sunday’s defeat to the Green Bay Packers was the sort of game the Jets could have won, which made the result sting even more. Still, there were a few bright spots, and Thomas was right at the top of that list. The second-year cornerback has gone from battling for a starting role in training camp to looking like New York’s best boundary cornerback through the first two games of the season.
That rise matters for more than just the defense. It also gives Darren Mougey’s 2025 draft class a badly needed lift after a rocky start, with Thomas standing out while much of the rest of the group has struggled to make an impact.
Through two games, Thomas has graded out as one of Pro Football Focus’s top-10 cornerbacks in the NFL, with an overall mark of 75.4. Against Green Bay, he gave up just two catches for 14 yards on four targets.
The most encouraging part of his game has come against the run. Thomas owns an 81.6 run-defense grade, which ranks eighth among qualified cornerbacks so far in 2026. For a second-year player, that’s a major step forward.
He also made a little team history on Sunday. Thomas tied Aaron Glenn and Darrelle Revis for the Jets’ franchise record for most pass breakups in consecutive games, notching his eighth straight PBU against the Packers.

For Mougey, Thomas is the one clear win so far from a draft class that hasn’t done much else. The hope was that tight end Mason Taylor would help form a tandem with Kenyon Sadiq, but through two games Taylor has only two catches for minus-2 yards, despite spending the summer working with Geno Smith and the new offense.
Fourth-round wide receiver Arian Smith has also been a major disappointment since the Jets took him in 2025, and the rest of the Day 3 group has barely seen the field. That’s because they’re not ready to contribute yet.
If Thomas keeps trending up, he can soften the overall look of the class. For now, though, his emergence stands out as the one encouraging development in an otherwise thin early return.

Jowon Briggs made sure the Jets had to notice him in Week 2. With David Onyemata sidelined, the defensive tackle stepped into a bigger role and looked the part, earning the highest Pro Football Focus grade among New York defenders while holding up well against the run and showing enough juice as a pass rusher to stand out in a crowded rotation.
The bigger question now is what happens when Onyemata is back. Briggs did more than just fill a temporary gap, and his performance created the kind of problem every defensive front wants - too many playable linemen, not enough snaps to go around. Breece Hall Put The Jets Packers Collapse On One Unit
The Jets Week 2 collapse in Green Bay came with plenty of blame to spread around, but Breece Hall was quick to point the finger at one side of the ball. New York led by 10 points in the fourth quarter before the Packers rallied to take the game, and Hall said the offense failed to finish the job even though the defense had done enough to put the team in position to win.
Halls own day reflected the broader frustration, with 29 rushing yards and 63 receiving yards in a game the Jets let slip away. Dante Moore is already starting to draw NFL attention, and it is not hard to see why. The Oregon quarterback looked sharp in Week 3 against Portland State, going 19 of 23 for 280 yards and four touchdowns, a performance that only adds to the buzz around him as a potential headliner in the 2027 NFL Draft. For a Jets fan base that has lived through the leagues endless quarterback cycle, any early conversation about the future tends to land with extra weight.
Todd McShay and Cody Williams have both floated Moore as a top prospect in that class, with the Jets and Browns among the teams that could eventually make sense depending on how their current situations develop.
