Jets vs. Chiefs: A Season Opener with a Twist
The New York Jets potentially kicking off the 2026 season against the Kansas City Chiefs is intriguing enough on its own. But throw in the fact that Patrick Mahomes is recovering from a torn ACL, and things get even more interesting. With Mahomes' return uncertain for Week 1, the Chiefs might have to rely on a familiar face to Jets fans: Justin Fields.
Fields, who recently joined the Chiefs in a trade, could find himself starting against the very team that let him go. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid expressed confidence in Fields during a conversation with NFL Media’s Judy Battista, noting that Mahomes is putting in long hours at the facility but emphasizing the need for a backup plan. "We snuck out and got a good quarterback to back him up," Reid mentioned, highlighting Fields' potential to step in and deliver wins if needed.
The NFL schedule release in April will confirm if this matchup happens, but the prospect of Fields facing the Jets adds a layer of drama. The Jets, who parted ways with Fields after a disappointing stint, have their own quarterback questions to address.
Jets Looking for Answers at QB
Fields joined the Jets with high hopes, given his dual-threat capabilities and previous flashes with the Bears and Steelers. Yet, his tenure in New York was underwhelming, averaging just 139.9 passing yards over nine games.
After a rough 0-7 start, Jets owner Woody Johnson decided it was time for a change. Fields was traded to the Chiefs, with the Jets covering an $8 million signing bonus and receiving a 2027 sixth-round pick in return.
Now, the Jets turn to Geno Smith, a familiar face, to lead their offense. Smith, who last played for the Jets in 2016, is coming off a challenging season with the Raiders, where he led the league with 17 interceptions. At 35, Smith is seen as a short-term solution.
The Jets' quarterback room also includes Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe. With nine draft picks in hand, including four in the top 44, the Jets have options. ESPN’s Matt Miller has suggested Penn State’s Drew Allar as a potential Day 2 pick, and Miami’s Carson Beck is another name with starting experience to consider.
As the Jets navigate their quarterback conundrum, the potential opening game against the Chiefs-and a familiar face in Fields-could set the stage for a fascinating start to the season.
