INDIANAPOLIS - The Jets' Coaching Shift: Glenn Takes the Helm
In January, the New York Jets seemed set to bring in Wink Martindale as their defensive coordinator. But on January 28, the team pivoted, opting instead for Brian Duker, the Miami Dolphins' secondary coach. This choice hinted that Jets head coach Aaron Glenn would be calling the defensive plays in 2026, a notion he confirmed at the NFL Scouting Combine.
The decision stirred some controversy, with speculation that Jets owner Woody Johnson had overruled Glenn's preference for Martindale. Glenn, however, addressed these rumors head-on, dismissing the drama.
Before the search even began, Glenn had suggested at a press conference that he might take over play-calling duties. The potential pairing with Martindale seemed to challenge this, as Martindale's reputation as a seasoned defensive coordinator made him a likely candidate to call plays.
Yet, Glenn revealed that his mind was already made up. Martindale was on board with Glenn's plan, but Glenn chose Duker due to their established relationship.
“My decision was made that I was going to be the play-caller, and when I brought Wink in, he was still a go,” Glenn explained. “Brian Duker has been with me for three years, has been through the fire with me.
There’s nothing more valuable than having that relationship with someone.”
This insight into Martindale’s willingness to adapt underscores a more unified vision within the organization than initially perceived. Hiring someone like Duker, who knows Glenn’s style and the team’s identity, makes strategic sense.
The narrative of Woody Johnson's influence was another point of contention. Some critics suggested Johnson's involvement forced Glenn to take over play-calling, leading to the switch from Martindale to Duker.
Glenn, however, refuted these claims, emphasizing his positive relationship with Johnson. “There’s a narrative about this team, me, our general manager, and Woody that really needs to change,” Glenn stated.
“Woody’s answer is always, ‘What can I do to help you? What can I do to help you be successful?’”
Despite the speculation, Glenn’s track record of success in Detroit speaks volumes. His openness about his relationship with Johnson aims to shift public perception. As the Jets move forward, Glenn’s leadership and the trust in his chosen team are set to define their defensive strategy in the upcoming season.
