Aaron Glenn is taking a hard look in the mirror after his first season as head coach of the Jets, acknowledging the need for improvement. "There are mistakes I made that I won't replicate going into this season," Glenn stated at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. With a 3-14 record in his inaugural year, Glenn knows the stakes are high for 2026.
Here’s what stood out from Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey’s media session on Tuesday:
- Breece Hall's Future with the Jets
The Jets are committed to keeping their star running back, Breece Hall, even if it means using the franchise or transition tag by the March 3 deadline. Hall, who rushed for over 1,000 yards, is a key piece of the Jets' offense.
"The tags are an option," Mougey explained. "Ideally, we'd find a way to get a deal done and keep Breece around."
The franchise tag would ensure draft compensation if Hall signs elsewhere, while the transition tag would allow the Jets to match any offer. Mougey is confident, saying, "We'll find a way to keep Breece here if we can't get a deal done."
- Glenn Stands by Owner Woody Johnson
Glenn made it clear that owner Woody Johnson is not meddling in coaching decisions. Reports suggested Johnson was dictating roles, but Glenn countered, "There’s a narrative about Woody that really needs to change."
According to Glenn, Johnson is supportive and asks, "What can I do to help you be successful?" Glenn is determined to change the perception of Johnson, emphasizing the owner's supportive nature.
- Defensive Coordinator Decisions
Glenn nearly brought in Wink Martindale as defensive coordinator but ultimately decided to call the defense himself, describing it as his "superpower." He chose Brian Duker, a trusted colleague from Detroit, to join his staff. "He’s been through the fire with me," Glenn said, highlighting the importance of their working relationship.
- Justin Fields' Status
Quarterback Justin Fields remains with the Jets for now, despite speculation about his future. Mougey noted, "There is no trigger day with Justin's contract.
So he's part of the Jets." The team is evaluating its options at quarterback, with ongoing discussions involving Glenn, new offensive coordinator Frank Reich, and quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave.
Fields is still part of those conversations as the Jets weigh their options.
- Unlikely Move to No. 1 Draft Pick
The Jets have their eyes on quarterback Fernando Mendoza, but moving up to the No. 1 pick seems unlikely. The Raiders hold that position, and Mougey, who has connections with Raiders GM John Spytek, is doubtful about a trade. "I talk to Spytek and those guys often," Mougey said, acknowledging discussions but downplaying the possibility of a deal.
As the Jets gear up for the new season, Glenn and Mougey are focused on making strategic decisions to turn the team's fortunes around. With key player negotiations and draft considerations on the horizon, the Jets are setting the stage for what they hope will be a successful 2026.
